We’ll review some of the athletes that are leading The Marathon 7v7 program to their success, and preview what to expect from them for this upcoming fall.
Bryce Yates Bryce Yates 6'0" | 170 lbs | ATH Matoaca | 2025 State VA | 6′ 170 lbs | Wide Receiver | Matoaca High School | Class of 2025
Yates is the 3rd ranked receiver and 11 the overall player in the state. The Adidas Freshmen All American was named 3rd Team All Region Wide Receiver as a Freshmen. He helped Matoaca to a 9-2 record during the season and a playoff appearance, before losing to Patrick Henry HS in the 1st round. His recruiting is already starting to gain some steam this spring has he is receiving interest from Old Dominion and James Madison.
Carson Lambert Carson Lambert 6'0" | 185 lbs | QB Benedictine College Prep | 2026 VA | 5’11” 170 lbs | Quarterback | Cosby High School | Class of 2025
Lambert earned the Varsity starting role this past fall as a Freshmen. Cosby HS didn’t have a great season, but the young gunslinger showed plenty of promise. He has a strong arm and can move well outside of the pocket. This spring he has already led the Marathon 7v7 to a 15u Pylon Championship in Richmond last week, and another semi final appearance last month. Lambert has been working with QB Coach ,Chad Chafee, and looks to be a key component in turning Cosby’s football program around.
Ben Whitver | 6′ 170 lbs | Wide Receiver | Powhatan High School | Class of 2026
Whitver, a Class of 2026 athlete, is one of the younger guys on the team, but came up big in The Marathon’s championship run during the Pylon Richmond tournament. The Powhatan rising freshmen had a dominant performance scoring 7 touchdowns for his team during the tournament. Powhatan HS had a decent season last fall, going 7-4 in the regular season and losing in the first round of the Class 4 Playoffs by only one point to eventual state champion Varina HS. Whitver will be a good addition to an already solid program.
Justice Thompson | 6′ 190 lbs | Athlete | Manchester High School | Class of 2024
Thompson was another big play maker for The Marathon in last week’s tournament. He finished off the tourney with two interceptions and five pass breakups in total. Manchester High finished with a 7-3 record before losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs to Western Branch, and Thompson will be a big part of their success moving forward. The 2024 athlete is starting receive college interest and recently visited the University of North Carolina.
Benjamin Street | 5’9” 160 lbs | Collegiate School | Wide Receiver | Class of 2025
Street, who is currently ranked as the 35th overall player in the state of Virginia & the 8th ranked receiver in the state for his class, is another explosive play maker for The Marathon. This past season he earned plenty of varsity playing time, starting as a true freshman, and was a threat to score every time the ball was in his hands. He has the ability to take a 2 yard slant or a bubble screen to the house, and the ability to beat opposing secondaries deep with his top end speed.
Linwood Johnson | 6’1” 190 lbs | Quarterback | Varina High School | Class of 2025
Johnson is already off to a great start as a student athlete. The 4.0 student is the future of Varina football, who went 13-1 and won the Class 4 State Championship this past fall defeating Broad Run 28-21 for the school’s first state title in history. Johnson, who has a strong arm and puts a great touch on the ball, was also a pivotal piece in the Marathon’s Championship run last week.
