While diving into the Class of 2024 again, I found myself looking at the QB watch list. This Watch List is reserved for QBs with undisputed potential but lacks the Varsity playing time to garner an accurate ranking. Now, I’ll highlight a few athletes from the Watch List and state my expectations for them.
[player_tooltip player_id="216986" first="Tyler" last="Herzog"] - Avondale
Herzog is someone I am immensely excited about because of the connection I have with the Avondale program and knowing how passionate Herzog is about football. When I coached at Avondale during the 2020 season, Herzog was a competitive freshman who always had a fire in his eyes. Although undersized and young at the time, Herzog was competitive and held himself and his teammates to a high standard. I expect Herzog to be good. Not great, but good. I know he’ll have some good weapons around him, and he could lead the yellowjackets to an OAA Gold title. One early-season test I look forward to is the week three matchup against Seaholm, as Avondale will face an improved Maple defense with talent at EDGE and DB.
[player_tooltip player_id="253304" first="M’khi" last="Guy"] - Muskegon
Taking over the Quarterback position for one of the most storied and successful programs in the state is no small task, but I have the utmost confidence that Guy will impress. I haven’t heard or seen too much about Guy, but I know he’s an athletic QB who plays multiple sports, and he’s been garnering hype from the Muskegon coaching staff. On his floor, I see him as a good, well-coached QB. At his ceiling, I see him as a true dual-threat guru that can beat you in any way. There is an issue with him being listed at 5’6", but if he grows, he’s a potential D1 prospect.
[player_tooltip player_id="249545" first="Brayden" last="McCoon"] - Traverse City Central
Standing at 6’3", [player_tooltip player_id="249545" first="Brayden" last="McCoon"] is filling some wildly big shoes at TC Central. Like Guy, McCoon plays basketball, and from the looks of it, he had a great season. His film is good, as he throws an accurate ball with some areas for improvement in the footwork department. I’m fascinated with some of the play design with McCoon under center, with him rolling out (to the L and R) often. I don’t expect him to play as well as [player_tooltip player_id="30131" first="Joshua" last="Burnham"], but I expect him to be a better passing QB than him. Traverse City Central is a very well-coached team with excellent facilities, and I am curious to see the play design with McCoon after a run-heavy year with Burnham.
[player_tooltip player_id="253232" first="Scotty" last="Millman"] - East Grand Rapids
I’m not 100% sure if Millman will start in 2022, but Millman is a name to keep an eye on even if he doesn’t. The breakdown by QBHitList was an eye-opener as they had some excellent praise for him. He’s calm in the pocket and throws a suitable ball. Oh, and he’s a rare southpaw! I’m very interested to see Millman play in a new offensive system headed by new Head Coach Josh Shattuck. From a quick glimpse at his offense, it looks very QB-friendly with lots of play-action and deep passes.
