As teams in York County get started in a few weeks, we wanted to take a look at one player on each side of the ball that you will want to keep your eye on in Part 1 of a two-part series.
Rock Hill
Offense – QB Matthew Wilson Matthew Wilson 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB Rock Hill | 2024 State SC : Wilson returns for his junior season with his dynamic playmaking ability, whether it’s on the run in the passing game or being able to make plays with his feet in the quarterback run game. The question to watch will be who will step up at wide receiver for the Bearcats?
Defense – DT Andrew Trotter: Trotter will be a part of a new look Rock Hill defensive line following the graduation of their two superstar linemen in Maurice Bonneau Maurice Bonneau 6'2" | 220 lbs | DL Rock Hill | 2022 State SC and Luke Bracey Luke Bracey 6'6" | 235 lbs | TE Rock Hill | 2022 State SC . Trotter did get some limited time during the 2021 season and had an ability to stop the run and stuff things in the inside run game. There may be opportunities for guys to step up from the JV and freshman squads and fill the gaps.
Northwestern
Offense – RB Turbo Richard Turbo Richard 5'10" | 205 lbs | RB Northwestern | 2024 State SC : While the Trojans’ biggest question on offense is who will replace Will Mattison Will Mattison 6'4" | 190 lbs | QB Northwestern | 2022 State SC , who is headed to Gardner-Webb to play college ball, whoever ends up taking the snaps this fall will have a consistent threat to hand the ball off to. Richard ran for 1054 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2021 at an impressive 6.1 yards per carry.
Defense – LB Damien Jackson: Jackson returns for his senior season as he had a strong junior season as he finished with 30 solo tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss. His ability to rush off the edge and pursue the football was something that stood out to us watching his film from last year and that will be something to keep your eye on.
South Pointe
Note: The Stallions have a new head coach in Bobby Collins, who was at Marlboro County prior to his arrival in Rock Hill. He is no stranger to football in the area, serving in positions at Lancaster and two Charlotte area schools, Hough and Providence Day. Collins replaces DeVonte Holloman, who left this offseason to join Shane Beamer’s staff at the University of South Carolina as a Defensive Analyst.
Offense – WR Khyre Rawlinson Khyre Rawlinson 5'5" | 135 lbs | WR South Pointe | 2023 State SC : Rawlinson missed most of the 2021 season due to an injury, but in the time that we saw him at the beginning of the year, he was impressive in the slot. He excelled in the quick passing game and the out routes. With a full spring to continue to develop as a senior, he’ll be looked to as one of the leaders.
Defense – DL Chris Dixon Chris Dixon 6'2" | 260 lbs | DL South Pointe | 2024 State SC : Dixon took part in our PRZ Carolinas Showcase back on April 9 and from what we saw, he was un blockable and showed excellent hand movement in being able to defeat blocks. He finished with 60 tackles and 14 quarterback hurries in 2021.
York
Offense – QB Ayden Davis Ayden Davis 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB York | 2024 State SC (pictured): Davis started for the Cougars as a sophomore and led them to a first round playoff appearance in 2021. He is another dynamic dual-threat quarterback who can make things happen when things break down. It will be interesting to see his growth and development, particularly as a passer.
Defense – DB Debo Hall Debo Hall 5'11" | 185 lbs | DB York | 2024 State SC : Hall is still a young guy who will be entering his junior season, but he has all the intangibles of a great defensive back. If you need someone who will make a critical goal line stand, he has the physicality you need. Or if it’s coming up in run support, he can do that as well.
Clover
Offense – RB Elijah Farmer: Farmer is a physical downhill runner who is not easy to bring down on first contact. We noticed him during a film review of the 2021 season back in February and he’s a threat to score when he touches it. It will be interesting to see what kind of changes he’s brought to his game in the spring and heading into the fall.
Defense – DE Omari Davis: Davis was a disruptor on the defensive line for the Blue Eagles, and is primed to have another strong season. He can plug up holes and stop the run and has great hand movement to be able to defeat blocks.
