The 18U champs were Houston’s own team #TakeOver, and the 15U champs were San Diego’s Fast Camp. The class of 2024 stood out. Listed below are the top 2024 performers from over the weekend.
WR Andre Thompson Andre Thompson 5'8" | 150 lbs | WR Manvel | 2024 State TX | 5’8″ 150lbs | Manvel
#TakeOver WR came home with not only a championship trophy and ring but offensive MVP. Thompson is an electric player who plays well beyond his size. Everything Thompson does is crisp, smooth, and technical. His route running and hands were very notable to me as he had no problem getting open or hauling in jump balls. His elite skill set earned him not only offensive MVP, but has accumulated him D1 offers from the likes of Arkansas, Miami (FL), Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and more.
QB Mabrey Mettauer Mabrey Mettauer 6'5" | 215 lbs | QB The Woodlands | 2024 State TX | 6’5″ 215lbs | The Woodlands
Team Fury is led by standout 4 star gunslinger Mabrey Mettauer Mabrey Mettauer 6'5" | 215 lbs | QB The Woodlands | 2024 State TX . Even though temperatures were in the 30s and there was heavy wind early Saturday morning, Mettauer was putting the ball on the money. His accuracy wasn’t affected by the conditions and his ball could slice through the wind. The confidence and command Mettauer plays with gets high praise and was a pleasure to see in person. His skill set is versatile and he is undeniably one of the best QBs in the Houston area and his dozen-plus D1 offers can attest to that.
ATH Dylan Thomas | 6’2″ 180lbs | La Marque
,
Mike Evans’ DAB had a very impressive squad and Dylan Thomas was everywhere doing it all. Thomas is an athlete that on offense was a TD threat. There didn’t seem to be anything that the La Marque standout couldn’t do. With ideal size, Thomas can jump, run, back peddle, and just flat out ball. On the defensive side, he was on lockdown. Thomas had himself an impressive tournament that he will roll into spring ball with more confidence.
WR Zion Kearney | 6’3″ 190lbs | Hightower
#Takeover had the best receivers at the tournament and it wasn’t close. Big man Zion Kearney, has elite size and a strong lower body. Kearney can outjump anybody and is a dominant jump-ball threat. Kearney has strong hands, high points the football, and is a force to be reckoned with. At his size, he moves well and creates separation by combating the DB’s leverage. Zion Kearney is a D1 caliber wideout with a handful of offers already. Come fall of 2022, he will have more responsibility next season at Hightower and I’m fully confident in his ability to deliver at a high level.
WR Trevaun Dixon | 6’4″ 182lbs | Barbers Hill
#Takeover’s 6 foot 4 Trevaun Dixon’s stock is going up. Over the weekend, Dixon displayed his talents and had people talking. His game isn’t as limited as one might think for a 6’4″ wide receiver. He runs good routes by sinking his hips and with quick feet gets out his breaks well. Dixon has a great tool belt and should have a productive spring and fall.
ATH Gavin Collins | 5’10″ 155lbs | Clear Springs
Playing on Mike Evans’ DAB squad, Gavin Collins caught my eye early on. Collins is a smooth athlete who flies around with a lot of energy. Collins had some reps at WR where he looked natural, which caught my surprise to find out he’s truly a DB. Collins has good hips and acceleration that allowed him to be all around the field. Gavin Collins is a sleeper and needs to be on more radars and I expect his 2022 season to be a stock raiser.
