Considering South Carolina has just shy of 10,000 prep football players between the SCHSL and SCISA ranks, it’s an inevitable part of the process. But even now, with two months before our next ranking update, we’re constantly looking for talent.
We want you to see what we’re looking at.
In our weekly series dubbed the Community Film Room, we’re going to break down players who have yet to find their way into the rankings. Maybe they’re young, haven’t had a chance to get their film out or – yes, it’s entirely possible – we just missed them the last time around.
In Episode 7, we’re looking at someone we think could be the next star on a SCISA powerhouse, two edge rushers who love to wreck stuff, a quarterback on a run-heavy offense and a tailback who forces his pass-heavy one to adapt.
Peter Nodelman, DB/WR, Hilton Head Christian
Nodelman is the type of multi-faceted player who could develop into a dominant force at the SCISA Class 3A level in the next two years and beyond. While he’s just 5-foot-7, his 73-inch wingspan tells us he’s likely got some vertical growth ahead of him (check out the 1:17 mark of this film for proof of his reach). Already, Nodelman is a highly skilled defensive back and a budding slot receiver on a dominant team that is about to lose many of its best players.
CJ Cox, DL/LB, Loris
Cox (pictured) is a downright explosive edge rusher who happens to have some great timing instincts. Last year as a junior, the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder had 80.5 total tackles (including 28 for loss), five sacks, four fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles and four pass breaks-ups. He did that in just 10 games. He’s part of a developing defense that has strength in numbers, but his contributions stand out and should continue to do so.
Banks Lovett, QB, Green Sea Floyds
Here’s the thing about playing quarterback at Green Sea Floyds the last five years: No one is ever going to pay the position much attention due to a large stable of successful tailbacks. Lovett has spent the bulk of the last two seasons dispelling that reasoning. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound signal caller has continued to improve, and his ability to squeeze throws into tight windows gives the Trojans a passing dimension they haven’t had in recent memory.
Warren Rogers, DE, Westwood
The Midlands has a potential top-flight defensive end capable of blowing up his share of plays. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound lineman shows an ability to get to full speed in the fraction of a second immediately after the snap. He could benefit from a little more size – something that could be addressed during the rest of this offseason – but his speed while somehow not falling victim to over pursuit is what makes him such an interesting project. He was stuck behind some talented upperclassmen last fall, but he’ll have chances to shine early this season.
Jeremiah Hailstock, RB, Nation Ford
Hailstock is flying under the radar some, if for no other reason that QB Carson Black Carson Black 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB Nation Ford | 2023 State SC ’s 314 pass attempts last fall accounted for 60 percent of the team’s offensive plays. Still, here was Hailstock leading the team with 517 rushing yards and three scores. His carry total should increase next season after fellow tailback Eli Whitner Eli Whitner 5'8" | 180 lbs | RB Nation Ford | 2022 State SC ’s graduation. Hailstock is fast enough to break away and strong enough to break tackles. We wouldn’t be surprised if he chalked up a 1,000-yard season in 2022.
