Prep Redzone Louisiana reached out to coaches and managers around the state for a few of their top players to watch in the first month or so of action.
Here are three from the Bootleggers’ Southwest Louisiana team — one of the top regional branches of the state’s traditional power on the 7-on-7 circuit.
Jaylen Lawrence Jaylen Lawrence 6'1" | 205 lbs | LB Acadiana | 2023 LA — 6-1, 205 LB — Acadiana (2023)
The rising senior’s big frame and strength made him a menace in run defense and pass rush playing predominantly in the box this fall. But Lawrence has impressive lateral quickness and speed at his size and moves well in coverage, and those attributes are on full display playing the middle of the field in 7-on-7, closing windows and deflecting and intercepting passes. Incarnate Word and Northwestern State have been among his first offers, but his recruitment is just getting started.
Karon Jeanlouis — 6-0, 170 ATH — St. Martinville (2023)
Jeanlouis was a three-phase standout for a talented Tigers team that earned its highest playoff seed and made its deepest playoff run in nearly two decades. His 22.87-second 200-meter track speed, overall athleticism and balance make him a weapon in any of his roles a constant threat to break game-changing returns or blow the top off opposing defenses, or blanketing opposing receivers stride for stride.
Trey Tate — 6-1, 180 ATH — St. Louis Catholic (2024)
The youngest prospect of this trio is another speedy multisport athlete and two-way player who also played in the organization as a freshman last spring. Tate boasts a 4.51-second 40-yard dash he uses to fly around the football field and basketball court alike for interceptions, touchdowns, steals and open jumpers. Tate earned some playing time as a sophomore this fall, but appears to be taking a big step forward this spring and should be a notable breakout candidate to watch in the Lake Charles area this year.
