H-Town’s Top 2024 Defensive Backs
We now take a look at the top defensive backs in the Class of 2024. When I say this is a deep position in this class, I mean it! Talent all over the place and all have good experience under their belts now. The players below all saw the field and made big plays for their teams. Some names will be familiar and others are names to familiarize yourself with. If we missed any please let us know!
Maurice Williams Jr. – Shadow Creek
If you don’t know much about Williams, get familiar with him now because the kid is a flat out dawg on the field. He made game altering plays every game and played at such a high energy. Williams has a great frame and and plays a fast and physical game. He shows great power in his hits and at the point of attack. Williams plays the run exceptionally well and is cool and composed in coverage. He is the guy you want on your team and the thought of him getting better everyday is scary. Top notch talent right here and a name you will see and hear for years to come.
Chris Gant Jr. – Klein Collins
For his sophomore season Gant showed out and impressed many. His quick hips and reads helped his defense in many ways. Gant was very good in run support and loved to get in the mix. He did a good job of navigating through traffic and finding his way to the ball carrier and making plays. In the passing game he showed good instincts and played the deep ball well. His change of direction and speed really stood out. He will be a problem the more he develops and will be a key player for his team.
Bryson Burgess Bryson Burgess 5'9" | 165 lbs | DB Pearland Dawson | 2024 State TX – Dawson
Burgess plays his position extremely well. At the safety spot, Burgess is great support in the run and pass game. He is quick and his reactions to the ball are very impressive. Burgess’s break on the ball is beautiful and he plays physical ball. One thing that really stands out is his recovery and how he is never really beat on a play. Burgess does not give up! That along his awareness put him on this list. Burgess is an exciting player to watch as he just flies to the ball.
Ali Schuster – Clear Springs
Schuster has good length and shows a good break on passes. He reads and is very quick to react. Schuster is physical at the corner position and any intermediate route, he is on it. He will get into the run game as well and deliver some good hits when the opportunity is there. Schuster is definitely one to keep an eye on as he continues to develop. He has the potential to pop and be something special.
Trace Meadows – A&M Consolidated
Meadows is a ball hawk at the safety position and shows great ball skills. The way he reads a quarterbacks eyes and makes breaks on a ball is outstanding. No deep passes were safe when Meadows was in the vicinity. He showed very good lateral speed and played sideline to sideline. He was comfortable in space and made play after play in the secondary. Meadows is another one with the potential to pop and we will definitely keep eyes on him.
Justin Williams – Oak Ridge
Williams was excellent in run support and short passes. He showed good burst and decisiveness coming down hill. He found the running lanes and beat opposing running backs to the spot. Williams showed good tackling skills and awareness from the secondary. In coverage, Williams showed very good recovery speed and the ability to match with anybody. He was physical with slot receivers and used his hands well in breaking up passes. Good size, good range, and very good effort in Williams.
