Last week, we highlighted five players in York and Lancaster Counties who are either difficult to block at defensive end and a long snapper who can set his defense up well.
This week, we’re going around the state where we’ve got three versatile defensive backs who thrive in one-on-one coverage and hustle to the ball, a young offensive lineman who is flexible and can move out in space and a receiver who has good awareness at the position. Let’s jump in:
2025 DB Branden Broadwater Branden Broadwater 5'9" | 150 lbs | ATH Carolina Academy | 2025 State SC (@youngXbeo), Carolina
Broadwater is long and rangy and while he doesn’t play a ton of press coverage, he can stay with his receivers in one-on-one coverage. He doesn’t allow receivers to get inside leverage and excels in coming up to stop the run.
2025 DB Clayton Sondgeroth Clayton Sondgeroth 5'9" | 170 lbs | ATH Mill Valley | 2025 State KS (@claytonsondy), Chapin
As a first-year varsity starter, Sondgeroth made his name known. The thing that stood out about him is his hustle – if a running back was out into the open field in the middle of a big run, the freshman ran him down to prevent a touchdown. He’s another defensive back that can stay in stride with wide receivers and make plays on the ball as the timing of his jump is perfect.
2023 FS Clarence Simmons Clarence Simmons 6'1" | 185 lbs | DB Woodland | 2023 SC (@ClarenceSimmonz), Woodland
Simmons is impressive when it comes to getting inside of receivers. His well timed lateral movements allow him to jump quick routes and intercept them as two of them went back to the house. He can also stretch the field vertically and is a threat to score when the ball is in his hands.
2024 OL Brady Pickett Brady Pickett 6'2" | 275 lbs | OL Myrtle Beach | 2024 State SC (@TheBradyPickett), Myrtle Beach
Pickett is still young but was able to get valuable playing time as a sophomore. He made the most of it by imposing his will at the right tackle position – he has good flexibility to be able to adjust to a play that comes back his way and create a block for the running back. He can also step block and use his hands well.
2024 WR Adrian Buchanan Jr Adrian Buchanan Jr 6'3" | 185 lbs | DB Northwestern | 2024 SC . (@Im_Adrian13), South Pointe
Buchanan is an impressive, young receiver who can make plays on the outside. He comes out of his breaks well to make catches and get up field – he doesn’t dance in space or try to make a highlight reel play. You can tell by watching his film that he has good chemistry with his quarterback. He can also hold blocks and sustain them.
