On Wednesday, it was national signing day and 2022 prospects from all over the state signed with their future college programs. On Friday, we made our final update to the 2022 rankings. These rankings have been updated multiple times a year since our website launched in the summer of 2020. We can't wait to look back on this final update and see what each guy did at the next level and see just how accurate or inaccurate they were. But over the next several days, we'll spotlight several players at each position that have stood out to us in one way or another.
In this post, we put a spotlight on the defensive linemen. Overall, 24 defensive linemen made it into the final Top 200. 14 of those prospects were also in the Top 100. Owasso lineman [player_tooltip player_id="38674" first="Chris" last="McClellan"] was the highest rated defensive lineman and came in at #4 overall. You can read about McClellan in our Top Ten spotlight RIGHT HERE. But here, we put a spotlight on 10 defensive linemen who have stood out to us over the last few seasons. You can check out all of the defensive linemen in the Top 200 at the bottom of the post.
11) [player_tooltip player_id="61127" first="Desean" last="Brown"] - Choctaw
Right on the outside of the top ten was Choctaw defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="61127" first="Desean" last="Brown"]. Over the last three seasons, it would be tough to find a defensive end that has been more of a game-wrecker than Brown. He followed up a strong junior season with another great year as a senior, even though Choctaw fell short of their ultimate goal of a state title. The only question mark around Brown has nothing to do with on the field production and he was still one of the best at his position.
23) [player_tooltip player_id="101400" first="Jaleel" last="Johnson"] - Putnam City North
We can't help but wonder what could have been for Putnam City North defensive end [player_tooltip player_id="101400" first="Jaleel" last="Johnson"] throughout his senior season. He put up fantastic numbers despite missing significant time to an injury. But what would those numbers look like if Johnson got the full season in? Despite missing time, that didn't impact his status as one of the best defensive lineman prospects and he earned his spot as a Top 25 overall prospect. Another in-state product is headed to Stillwater to potentially be a star at OSU.
29) [player_tooltip player_id="38691" first="Maliek" last="Bogard"] - Beggs
After missing time during his junior season, Beggs defensive end [player_tooltip player_id="38691" first="Maliek" last="Bogard"] was ready to bounce back in a big way with a huge senior campaign. He did just that as he teamed up with 2023 defensive tackle [player_tooltip player_id="112479" first="Chance" last="Jordan"] to create a terrifying pass rush for opposing quarterbacks. With Bogard coming off the edge like a mad man with his size, opposing quarterbacks didn't have a chance. Bogard has a high ceiling and we think he'll end up having a great college career if he continues working.
30) [player_tooltip player_id="283218" first="Donovan" last="Rieman"] - Enid
Evaluating prospects is far from a perfect formula and players slip through the cracks all the time. And I'll be the first to say I didn't see this one coming as Enid defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="283218" first="Donovan" last="Rieman"] took a visit to Kansas State, got offered and would commit to the Wildcats. Most media members around the state would echo what I say when I admit that I didn't know much about Rieman. Then you throw on the tape and realize he's that guy and truly is one of the better linemen in the state.
41) [player_tooltip player_id="61129" first="Colemon" last="Thurber"] - Jenks
Jenks won their second straight state title in 2021 behind a dominating defense and that defense was led by defensive end [player_tooltip player_id="61129" first="Colemon" last="Thurber"]. The Jenks senior has been a consistent riser up the 2022 rankings and there's a pretty easy explanation for that. Every time we see him, he gets better and better. His combination of size, strength and power made him a match-up nightmare for opposing offensive lines. Thurber is headed to NEO and should be a high priority juco transfer prospect in a year or two.
44) [player_tooltip player_id="38697" first="AJ" last="Brown"] - Jenks
The second Jenks Trojan and right behind Thurber is defensive tackle [player_tooltip player_id="38697" first="AJ" last="Brown"]. The Jenks standout was one of our favorite defensive tackles to watch over the last two seasons. Brown is a bit undersized for the DT position and that's why his recruitment never truly took off. But watch him play and it will erase any questions about his size. Brown will take the preferred walk on route at Oklahoma State and chances are that he'll end up earning a scholarship at some point during his stay in Stillwater.
55) [player_tooltip player_id="154571" first="Xavier" last="Mason"] - Norman
We first saw Norman defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="154571" first="Xavier" last="Mason"] at our Showcase Camp in June of 2021. We were immediately sold on him as a defensive end based on his physicality and energy. Mason got as many reps in against as many offensive linemen as possible. The Norman defensive lineman has signed to play college ball at NEO and has a great shot to be a transfer to a decent college program in a year or two. Mason is ready to work and has soared up the recent ranking update.
59) [player_tooltip player_id="155874" first="Duvan" last="Boshoff"] - Regent Prep
Another prospect that we first got a chance to see at that June camp was Regent Prep's [player_tooltip player_id="155874" first="Duvan" last="Boshoff"]. We don't have a lot of coverage of the 8-man programs in Oklahoma so 8-man standouts could slip through the cracks. However, once we saw Boshoff in person, it was hard to overlook him as he looks the part physically. Boshoff was one of the bigger stock risers from the position group and ended up jumping into the Top 60 for overall prospects. He's a hidden gem in this class.
66) [player_tooltip player_id="229870" first="Darius" last="Hampton"] - Del City
When it comes to "stock risers" in the 2022 class, we don't think that another prospect soared up the recent ranking update quite like Del City defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="229870" first="Darius" last="Hampton"]. The senior was on a defensive line that featured stars in 2023 [player_tooltip player_id="57157" first="Jaedon" last="Foreman"] and 2024 [player_tooltip player_id="110735" first="David" last="Stone"]. But it was Hampton that led the team in sacks with over 20 on the season and became one of the best defensive standouts in Class 6A-2. Hampton was a breakout star and earned his spot on this list with his play as a senior.
115) [player_tooltip player_id="264322" first="Chris" last="Shaputis"] - Guthrie
Another breakout star from the 2021 season was Guthrie defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="264322" first="Chris" last="Shaputis"]. The Blue Jays returned to the physical form that relied on a running game and strong defense in 2021. Leading that defense was Shaputis up front, who went from somewhat unknown across the state to one of the breakout stars in Class 5A. The Blue Jays fell short of their ultimate goal but Shaputis became one of the top defensive lineman prospects in the state's 2022 class.
