What they’ve got at their disposal is number of highly ranked players ready in the wings.
Right now, five offensive players have put themselves in line to start getting the type of attention they’ve been fighting for – in many cases while producing over the last two seasons. Be it combine season or just not having older players taking up so much of the recruiters’ time, things should change sooner rather than later.
Zolten Osborne Zolten Osborne 6'2" | 205 lbs | QB Fort Dorchester | 2023 State SC , QB, Fort Dorchester
Osborne has been hurt some by not being to attend some of the camp circuits over the past year or so. But the talent level is clearly there. The No. 2 overall player and top-ranked QB in his class has the type of arm strength that some college will fall in love with. And while he’s met unofficially with several recruiters, it appears at this point as if no one wants to be first. After all, he’s a rising senior with no offers. Eventually, colleges will stop overthinking it.
Jarvis Green Jarvis Green 5'11" | 190 lbs | RB Dutch Fork | 2023 State SC , RB, Dutch Fork
Charlotte pulled the trigger on offering Green already. We predict that a few more mid-level schools may be on the verge of doing the same. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound back had a huge junior season and has film on top of film showing him doing this thing. The hardest part for him at such a bear of a position was patience. But in the next few months, a whole bunch of schools are going to need to build depth at tailback.
Eli Merck Eli Merck 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR DW Daniel | 2023 State SC , WR, Daniel
You can’t argue with production. In helping Daniel to back-to-back Class 3A titles, Merck has recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons despite losing five total games to the pandemic. He’s got 31 receiving touchdowns in that span. Merck can play any receiver position on the field, and his skill set bouncing from outside to the slot will make him attractive to schools who need to solidify various receiving roles.
Cam Johnson Cam Johnson 6'2" | 295 lbs | OL Seneca | 2023 State SC , OL, Seneca
Johnson hit another bit of a growth spurt lately, tacking on another inch and a few more pounds. That’s a plus. But it still takes a back seat to the violence he brings to the offensive line. Playing mostly right tackle last season, Johnson had no problem engaging one or even two defenders simultaneously. It’s a skill set he learned from also playing the other side of the ball. You can’t teach size. But you also can’t teach tenacity.
Vaughn Blue Vaughn Blue 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Oceanside Collegiate Academy | 2023 State SC , RB, Oceanside Collegiate
Blue has a few teammates who have been getting swarmed by recruiters, and it’s almost assuredly going to filter down to the shifty and battle-tested tailback. Last fall, Blue rushed for 1,390 yards and 16 touchdowns while playing a very difficult schedule for a Class 3A program. If he can show off an increased ability catching the ball out of the backfield, the FCS and D2 guys are going to start knocking. And knocking. And knocking.
