In the last couple of years, the Dakotas have had some fun backs to watch that come with all different attributes that helped their team be successful. In my opinion, the rushing attack is one of the more important assets to have in football, so here are the athletes that I think play a huge role for their High School team and would do-so as well at the next level.
Isaiah Huus Isaiah Huus 6'0" | 205 lbs | RB Bismarck | 2022 State – Bismarck
Huus was a back that was built to dish out punishment for the opposing defenses. The kid has a huge frame and a lot of muscle behind it. On top of that, his vision and football sense work hand-and-hand. He is able to find the smallest gap and then drive right through it for the biggest gain possible, taking multiple defenders to bring him down each play. If he got a head of steam, he wasn’t going backwards, he was not flashy at all, just foot in the ground, straight ahead power running. He had a decent amount of speed to break a big gain once he got into space, whether it was running or catching the ball out of the backfield, which made him a reliable target as well. While he only had one game in his Senior Season on film due to injury, I will tag that game with his Junior Season as well.
Caleb Rist Caleb Rist 5'10" | 185 lbs | RB Des Lacs-Burlington | 2022 State – Des Lacs- Burlington
Rist has been our Prep Redzone junkie this past year, driving a long ways to attend many of our showcases in many different sites, the kid just wants to play football! I enjoyed watching his film because you can see his heart and grit on full display in each play. The kid has a motor that does not stop! He keeps running after he gets hit, if all 11 defenders don’t get to him, odds are he’s going to get loose and break a big one on any given play. Along with his motor, he has excellent vision, power and the speed to make big plays at any time from anywhere on the field. He has agility, but his mentality in how he runs the ball doesn’t make him show, he is also a one-cut, straight ahead runner. While he likes to stretch runs out to the perimeter, he knows when to cut back into lanes that defense may leave open trying to chase him.
Ashton Hanson Ashton Hanson RB Florence-Henry | 2022 State – Florence- Henry
Hanson is that exciting, big play 9-man football player I like to watch. I liked watching him find the gap and then accelerate and get to full speed and leave defenders in the dust. He had an amazing amount of acceleration to get to his top speed before the Line of Scrimmage. He moved laterally almost as well as he moved vertically, another RB you had to get all the defenders around and corral him to try and slow him down. He wasn’t one to dish out contact, but that was more-so because no one could catch him, his vision and agility helped him find the smallest gaps and squeeze right through them, then reaccelerate for a big play.
Aiden Erickson Aiden Erickson RB Elkton-Lake Benton | 2022 State – Elkton- Lake Benton
Erickson was the rock for the Elks in the past two seasons. He did a great job keeping the offense in motion, moving down the field by either rushing, catching, and/or throwing if need be. When running the ball, he wasn’t the guy to blow you away with speed, but he was patient in waiting for blocks to develop and did a great job getting up to full speed when he got into space. He was a physical runner however, loved lowering the shoulder and running through defenders. When he would get split out wide, he was a good screen guy, but then ran a good wheel route off of it for the big plays. He also had great awareness on trick plays, knew when to pitch, or sold a good fake when he kept it on hook-and-latters.
Parker Nelson Parker Nelson 5'11" | 190 lbs | RB West Fargo | 2022 State – West Fargo
Nelson is an outside zone back, and he ran that zone to near perfection. He was patient in stretching it out as far as he could go, then making a great cut up the field when he found open space. He used his good burst of speed to explode through his gaps and turn a small-looking play, into a big play if the defense didn’t flow correctly. With all the outside runs, he worked the sideline extremely well, knowing just how much space he had and could tight-rope it better than nearly anyone. While he didn’t put his power on display too much, he still showed that arm tackles weren’t enough to bring him down. He also had good enough balance to run through the smallest of gaps and still keep his footing to extend the play as far as he could if he couldn’t get the big play.
