Year in and year out, Georgia produces talent in the secondary extremely well due to good training, coaches, and overall scheme. Plenty of young defensive backs are starting to stand out, and the 2024 class appears to be just as deep as recent classes.
Here are some under the radar DBs to know about in the 2024 class…
Travis Terrell Jr – Mays
One of the top young two-way players in Atlanta, Terrell Jr had an outstanding season on both sides of the ball as a DB and a WR, catching 17 passes for 400 yards on offense while showing the ability to turn around and lock down receivers as a defensive back. He’s a true versatile athlete who made a name for himself last fall. As a defender, Terrell Jr. made 47 tackles and picked off three passes in the secondary. He also added 35 carries for 390 yards and added over 500 return yards as well.
Khaleed Latimore – Monroe Area
Don’t let his size fool you. This Athens-area defensive back plays bigger than his 5-foot-8 150-pound frame. He’s tough, knows how to get off blocks in the run game, and does a nice job of finding the football in coverage. He’s already making plays as a sophomore and it appears his best football is still ahead of him. He’s picked off four passes this season, and when he has the ball, he’s looking to run. He’s quick, shows good closing speed, and is a young 2024 defensive back to know for the future.
Ricardo Jones – Northside
One of the top ball-hawking safeties in Middle Georgia, Jones is a smooth defender in coverage who knows how to locate the ball and make a play on it. He’s fundamentally sounds, shows great footwork, and tracks the ball well in the air. He hands hands like a receiver, and when he’s able to go up and get it, the 6-foot-3 185-pounder does a great job of making a play on a consistent basis. Only a sophomore, Jones was able to be one of the more reliable defenders on one of the top 6A teams in the state. He’s also excellent against the run, showing he’s a sure tackler and someone who can get down hill and make a play behind the line of scrimmage. Last fall, Jones made 50 tackles, three forced fumbles, and intercepted eight passes, most for a sophomore across the state.
Carson Westbrook – Schley County
Westbrook is a small-town defensive back who has been picking passes off all season. A smaller, tougher safety, Westbrook has been a ball-hawk this season, picking off five passes, the most across the state for any sophomore. He tracks the ball well in the air and knows how to make a play on it when he’s around. He secures the ball well and always finds himself in a position to make a big play. He’s also made 49 tackles and recovered three fumbles .
