PRZ Stock-Up Showcase: Standout DBs

<em>Breaking down the top performing DBs from PRZ's CA Showcase at Santa Margarita Catholic this past weekend. Highlighted by underrated SoCal prospects ranging from sophomores to seniors. </em> <span style="font-weight: 400;">[player_tooltip player_id="270928" first="Carsten" last="Mamaril"]- <strong>Chaparral, 2022</strong></span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">Mamaril was one of the top overall performers on defense and tested in the top-3 of each category among DBs. He stood out in 1-on-1s as an effective press corner that plays physical on the front end and has the ball skills to make plays on the back end. He has quick feet and shows spatial awareness using sideline leverage well. He had one of the highlight 1-on-1 reps showing quick, fluid hips and widening the receiver toward the sideline. He’s a strong, physical CB at 5’10”/170 with the frame to add weight/strength. He showed ball skills creating turnovers in his sophomore season as a lockdown corner with quick feet and rangy speed. He’s a raw athlete with high upside and potential to be one of the top 2024 DBs in SoCal. He covered well in press man despite being a typical back-half secondary player and showed ability to cover slot in his junior film. He was an effective tackler in the run game last season that closed distance and broke down in space. He’s an instinctive player that covers well over the top and could fill in as a FS or SS at the next level given his frame. He plays faster than his 4.87 indicates and had one of the better broad jumps in the DB group with a 9’1”. He was a two-way guy playing WR/DB his senior season and was a playmaker with the ball in his hands posting 38 catches for 11 TDs and earning offensive MVP in the Orange League. He’s a versatile athlete with the physical makeup that could fit into either position at the next level.
