Over 150 prospects showed out at the first CA PRZ Showcase at Santa Margarita Catholic this past Sunday. The event was filled with high level talent and competition at all positions with college scouts and coaches in attendance. Here is a breakdown of the positional MVP's as voted by the PRZ Scouts and positional coaches. Keep an eye out for Top Performers, Positional Breakdowns, and more event coverage throughout the week.
QB: [player_tooltip player_id="145193" first="Evan" last="Tomich"], 2023, Mayfair HS
Tomich earned QB MVP after performing well in testing, individual drills, and competition. He caught the eye of scouts and coaches by showing off his natural arm talent in combination with his smooth release and footwork throughout the day. Possesses an effortless over the top delivery but the ball jumps out of his hand with good velocity and trajectory at all three levels. He was precise and accurate with his ball placement during the 1on1 portion of the day consistently being able to throw his receivers open and allow them to make a play on the ball. Capped off the day with a 4.52 40 time. Recruitment has been steadily rising throughout the year with seven D1 offers including Arizona State, Cincinnati, Oregon State, and Kansas with the expectation that more will come as he continues on the same trajectory.

RB: [player_tooltip player_id="145237" first="Major" last="Givens"], 2023, Steele Canyon
Givens showed he’s a complete back with great versatility as a runner, receiver, and pass blocker. He was in the top of his position group in all three sessions flashing his top end speed in addition to his explosiveness, change-of-direction, and short area burst out of his cuts. He’s well-built with a strong/compact frame at 5’10” 185 lbs. and a solid lower half. Loved the fluidity, balance, and leverage he showed throughout the day as both a runner and receiver. Coaches highlighted his effectiveness and physicality in pass protection and how it would translate well to the college level. He’s still holding out for that first offer but he’s one to watch that has the talent, ability, and upside to develop into a top RB recruit the more he’s able to showcase his skillset.

WR: [player_tooltip player_id="250005" first="Dante" last="Scott"], 2023, Bonita Vista
Scott showed out early and often but first gained attention in the testing session with his length and speed at 6’2” 190 lbs. and a 4.56 40 time. In addition to his athleticism and size he showed an outstanding technical side to his game off the LOS and as a route runner. He was consistently able to attack and win at all three depths in 1on1’s. At the short/intermediate levels he flashed a great release move and drive phase with a quick transition in/out of his breaks to create separation. As he worked vertically down the field he displayed his top end speed and leaping ability while aggressively attacking the ball at the high point. He’s a natural pass catcher with plus body control and coordination to track/adjust to ball flight and make tough contested receptions. Recruiting hasn’t taken off yet but possesses D1 size and talent with undeniable playmaking ability.

OL: [player_tooltip player_id="270927" first="Tyler" last="Chen"], 2023, Rancho Cucamonga
Chen was impressive throughout the day but solidified his OL MVP award with a dominant performance in the 1on1 and Best on Best sessions. At 6’2” 240 lbs. he’s not the biggest interior lineman but more than makes up for it with his strength at the POA and excellent fundamentals. He’s a plus athlete with great feet to match lateral movement in addition to his mobility and bend. He’s a technician with his hands and footwork with great efficiency, placement, and balance allowing him to be powerful at the contact point. He explodes his hips and drives his legs through contact but can also anchor down to stop an oncoming rush. He’s well-controlled and shows a great ability to sustain. Voted Second Team All-League but look for his stock to rise through the offseason entering his senior year.

DL: [player_tooltip player_id="270929" first="Nicholas" last="Johnson"], 2023, Santa Margarita Catholic
Johnson immediately passes the eye test with his ideal size, length, and frame for the college level at 6’4” 195 lbs. with great growth potential as he develops. He’s a plus athlete with quick feet and lateral agility to bend and work around blockers off the edge. He sets himself up early with good initial quickness and explosiveness off the LOS. Love his aggressiveness and motor from first contact through the whistle. Shows a good understanding of how to use his length and leverage to his advantage with his hand usage and placement. Has great potential with an extremely high ceiling entering his senior year.

DB: [player_tooltip player_id="270928" first="Carsten" last="Mamaril"], 2022, Chaparral
It was a tight and tough battle for DB MVP throughout the day between Mamaril out of Chaparral (Temecula) and 2024 [player_tooltip player_id="115475" first="Hasani" last="Scott"] out of Los Alamitos but Mamaril was able to pull away with several clutch plays in the Best on Best session. He’s an excellent cover corner with fluid athleticism and change of direction. He flashed good speed and a smooth transition out of his back pedal to stay in the hip pocket of receivers and cover all areas of the field effectively. He showed good burst and leg drive to break on the ball with the coordination and ball skills to make a play at the catch point. Continuously won 1on1 battles with the camps top receivers with good route recognition and instincts. Still uncommitted but holds an offer from Whittier so far.

LB: [player_tooltip player_id="270906" first="Samarai" last="Anderson"], 2023, Corona Centennial
Anderson checks a lot of boxes as a college level LB/SS coming out of one of the top programs in the state. Throughout the day he showed he can be a three down LB with his ability to make plays as a run stopper and in coverage. Possesses a good strong build with natural power and strength at 6’1” 210 lbs. He’s not overly long but good height and has some space to add mass as he develops. He’s an active and attacking downhill defender that plays fast, physical, and aggressive. He’s efficient and patient with his movement but is quick to trigger using his instincts and reactionary quickness to break on the ball. He runs well with good change of direction and closing speed/burst to redirect and chase down ball carriers sideline to sideline. Still holding out for that first offer but is a no doubt D1 talent that is receiving interest from both Power 5 and Group of 5 programs.

TE: [player_tooltip player_id="270863" first="Colin" last="Dickson"], 2023, Wasco & [player_tooltip player_id="270875" first="Owen" last="Galasso"], 2023, Esperanza
Both TE’s made their case for MVP throughout the day going back and forth making plays. Each possess good size/frame for the position with Dickson coming in at 6’5” 215 lbs. and Galasso at 6’3” 225 lbs. Excellent receiving TE’s that are natural pass catchers and plus route runners. They’re confident with their hands and have a huge catch radius to haul in tough receptions outside their framework. They showed a good ability to use their size/body to their advantage by boxing out defenders and being strong at the catch point. Both can run and not only be big targets at the short and intermediate levels but can also attack the defense vertically and compete for the ball at the high point. Strong foundational skillsets to build on as they enter the offseason and senior year.
