What makes a great receiver? The ability to make an impact on every single snap, regardless of whether the ball comes your way or not.
Here, we take a look at some rising senior receivers that will surely add some D1 offers over the next year.
Darius Cannon Darius Cannon 5'10" | 170 lbs | ATH Gainesville (GA) | 2023 GA | 5’10 | Gainesville
Cannon is one of my personal favorites in the 2023 class. When he gets the ball in his hands, he is a touchdown threat every time. Has some serious make-miss ability in space. You couldn’t tackle him in a phone booth. Has good enough speed to run away from the defense, but again, he does his damage by making defenders miss in space. To go along with that, he is incredibly gifted when it comes to his athleticism. Shows off some impressive leaping ability on film, which allows him to go up over smaller defenders to make plays. After transferring schools, look for him to pick up some more exposure his senior year. Has received plenty of interest on the recruiting trail, and I would expect those interests to turn into offers pretty soon.
Lake Thoman | 5’11 | Denmark
Thoman is not the physical specimen that some programs look for, but he still has plenty to bring to the table. Is an extremely fluid route runner that has a knack for finding the open spots on the field. Not super fast, but is explosive off the line and can accelerate in a hurry. What is most impressive is his body control. Is able to make catches in uncomfortable positions and in traffic, which is also credit to his soft hands and concenctration. Thomas has the makings of an extremely reliable receiver, and some programs could come knocking soon.
Jailen Taylor | 6’1 | Kennesaw Mountain
Taylor actually picked up his first D1 offer over a month ago, but something tells me he will be receiving plenty more. Why? Speed. On film, it looks like Taylor has legitimate 4,4 speed. Once he gets space, no defender on the field stands a chance of bringing him down. Shows off some vision and elusiveness when he takes screens to the house, but he also is a weapon in the downfield passing game. His speed allows him to run past the defense, which allows his team to take the top off the defense when they feel like it is needed. Taylor is lightning in a bottle and is an explosive play waiting to happen. In fact, he averaged over 32 yards per catch last season. With an even bigger role, Taylor could turn into a steal for any program that wants to take a chance on him.
Christian Mathis | 5’9 | Marietta
Again, Mathis is probably one of the most productive receivers in Georgia that you haven’t heard of. This past season, Mathis finished second on his team in receiving yards with 911, and is getting ready to take over as the premier option for his team. He was targeted early and often last season, and should get even more looks in 2022. On film, Mathis is as fluid of a route runner as anyone else in the state. He creates separation using his footwork, and he has enough speed to create even more space between him and defenders. On film, he makes several over-the-shoulder catches, so he does not lack any sort of focus or concentration. With another strong 2022 season, Mathis should garner plenty of attention on the recruiting trail.
Will Taylor | 6’2 | Cambridge
Taylor has a rare combination of size and speed that college coaches crave. Those two things are part of the reason he finished his junior season with over 900 receiving yards. At 6’2, he offers a big target that QBs can go to in the red zone, and his ability to highpoint the ball makes him all the more effective in that category. Where he really separates himself is his speed. His high-end speed allows the offense to take the top off the defense, but his lightning-fast feet and fluid route running get him wide open. Taylor’s size and playmaking ability are too impressive to pass up on.
Kahlil Jones | 6’0 | Paulding County
Jones is a perfect example of a receiver who can go up and get it. At 6’0. he is not overwhelmingly big, but he is a physical receiver who can fight through contact to make plays. Jones is also a standout on the basketball court, which can be seen when he rises up over DBs to high point the ball. Shows great concentration and focus on film, which is a big reason why he can reel in passes even while getting hit at the same time. To go along with his physicality, he is super explosive off the line and can accelerate quickly. These two things allow him to get downfield and become a threat in the deep game. Khalil was just a few catches away from 1K receiving yards this past year, and another big season will put him on the map.
