It’s been a while since we started out 2021 season recaps but we’re finally back in action, today we continue our District 3 recaps by looking at the Governor Mifflin Mustangs (Shillington, PA). Governor Mifflin was one of the top team’s in the state during the 2021 season regardless of their classification. The Mustangs ran through their regular season schedule with general ease, going 8-0 with an average victory of 49.5-11.6. After the regular season, they began their playoff run with a 63-35 win over Berwick before following it up by defeating Spring Grove 38-13. However, their playoff run would come to a shocking end against Exeter in the District 3 5A football title game by the final score of 31-28. For Exter, it revenged a 54-21 loss to the Mustangs back in October. Despite their playoff run coming to an unexpected, premature end, Governor Mifflin still had one of the better seasons out of any program in the state. Let’s take a look at some of the key players for the Mustangs in 2021 that led them to their 10-1 overall record and a District 3 5A runner-up title.
2022 Ranked Players:
No.2 RB [player_tooltip player_id="27558" first="Nicholas" last="Singleton"] Our second-ranked player overall in the 2022 class and the top running back in the state, [player_tooltip player_id="27558" first="Nicholas" last="Singleton"] was the biggest reason for Governor Mifflin’s success this season. The Gatorade Player of the Year dominated the competition to an extent that was hard to believe, considering the Mustangs offense was built solely around running the ball. The Penn State signee rushed for 2,059 yards and 44 touchdowns for Governor Mifflin this past season, averaging 12.4 yards per carry and 187-yards per game. Despite opponents week in and week out stacking the box and expecting Singleton to get the ball every time he was on the field, opposing defenses stood no chance at stopping him. A truly special player, Singleton is a true once-in-a-generation type talent out of District 3 and could very well be playing on Sundays sometime in the next four or five years. No.127 DB [player_tooltip player_id="27660" first="Eden" last="Johnson"] Johnson played both quarterback and corner for the Mustangs but his future is in the secondary at corner, in our opinion. At quarterback, Johnson completed 10-of-16 passing attempts for 305 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 481 yards and eight touchdowns over the course of 66 carries. As a corner, Johnson was second on the Mustangs this season with 77 tackles including one tackle for a loss. He also recorded three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. Johnson remains uncommitted to play college football but is a solid FCS/Division II prospect. No.406 OL [player_tooltip player_id="242685" first="Jose" last="Landrom"] While [player_tooltip player_id="27558" first="Nicholas" last="Singleton"] is one of the most talented running backs in the nation, someone has to be opening holes for him. Landrom was a major part of the Mustangs’ success on the ground this season as he and his offensive line did a tremendous job, allowing the Governor Mifflin offense to average well over 350-yards per game on the ground. If he does play football at the next level, Landrom projects to be a Division III caliber offensive lineman. No.485 LB [player_tooltip player_id="243290" first="Trey" last="Rock"] Governor Mifflin’s leading tackler in 2022 was senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="243290" first="Trey" last="Rock"], who notched 111 tackles on the season including 10 tackles for a loss and four sacks. He also recorded three forced fumbles. Rock remains uncommitted at this current time but is receiving quite a bit of Division II interest.
2023 Ranked Players:
No.65 DB [player_tooltip player_id="27746" first="Ayden" last="Martin"] Martin had a strong junior season for Governor Mifflin, recording 35 tackles including two tackles for a loss. He also recorded two interceptions on the season. He’s one of the top cornerbacks in the state of Pennsylvania in the class of 2023 and projects to be an FCS or Group of Five prospects.
Other players to know:

2024 QB [player_tooltip player_id="178682" first="Bryce" last="Wunderlich"]

2025 DL [player_tooltip player_id="263022" first="Mykell" last="Ford"]
