We all know football is filled with under-the-radar gems. This can come in severe oversights, such as Joe Burrow being told he’s not good enough to play at Nebraska, or Tom Brady being drafted 199th. The OK conferences are no exception to these universal rules. Here’s a look at one under-the-radar player from each OK conference.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Green</span></strong>
<strong>Union FS <a class="uni-link--implied" href="https://www.hudl.com/profile/15005109">[player_tooltip player_id="253312" first="DJ" last="Nixon"]</a></strong>
Nixon has had flashes of excellent safety play against the insane competition of the OK-Green. He’s demonstrated some great open-field tackling ability and plays some pretty nice coverage as well. A class of 2024 guy, Nixon is bound to have a great season on a fast-rising team.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Red</span></strong>
<strong>Caledonia QB <a class="uni-link--implied" href="https://www.hudl.com/profile/12946393">Mason McKenzie</a></strong>
Even though Caledonia had an incredible season last year, I didn’t hear much about the team or McKenzie. This new coaching staff has done a great job switching up the offense, and they’ve genuinely started to unlock McKenzie’s potential as a passer. This is not the T-Wing Caledonia offense anymore, this is a new offense that relies heavily on McKenzie’s arm, and he’s set for another great season.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Silver</span></strong>
<strong>Belding LB <a class="uni-link--implied" href="https://www.hudl.com/profile/16452647">Hunter Conrad</a></strong>
On one of the better teams in the Silver league, Conrad is a good linebacker who has been putting in some offseason work. Belding’s defense is always pretty solid, and I expect Conrad to play a significant role.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">White </span></strong>
Byron Center WR <a class="uni-link--implied" href="https://www.hudl.com/profile/13412892">[player_tooltip player_id="234518" first="Brady" last="Breit"]</a>
Out of all the teams in the White, Byron Center, for some reason, seems one of the least talked about but among the most successful groups. Brady Briet played great when I saw him in week one against Seaholm, and with a ton of offseason work, he has the potential to be dominant. Very interested to see what Byron Center will do in general after fielding a young team in 2021.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Gold</span></strong>
<strong>Catholic Central OL Brendhan Roehr</strong>
I’ve been told that Roehr is the future of the Catholic Central offensive line, which is tremendous praise. He’s a big boy at 6’3" 245lbs and sports some impressive agility for his size. He’ll be blocking for one of the most highly touted young QB’s in the state, and he has the opportunity to win his 3rd ring in 3 years.
<strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Blue </span></strong>
<strong>West Catholic WR [player_tooltip player_id="253301" first="Chaz" last="Vida"]</strong>
Sidelined by an injury last season, [player_tooltip player_id="253301" first="Chaz" last="Vida"] is a receiver with much potential. He’s speedy but at the same time has excellent hands. We all know that West Catholic is a historically significant team, and it should be interesting to see how Vida is utilized in the offense.
