This group has a lot of guys flying under the radar and here’s a closer look at those standouts from the 18U tryout.
WR DK Ward | 2022 | El Campo
DK Ward came out and put on a show on Sunday. His releases are creative, quick, and effective. It was hard for any of the competition to slow him down at the line. Once he gets into his route he was terrorizing DB’s using leverage and speed to get open at the top of the route. His footwork is stellar and he knows how to use it to create separation. Ward displayed his contested catch ability a couple of times hauling in some difficult jump balls. Ward is currently uncommitted but holds some notable D2\D3 offers from Angelo State and Mount Union but has D1 talent.
WR Russell Franklin | 2023 | George Ranch
Russell Franklin was very impressive during 1 on 1’s. A smooth route runner, he has great body control during his routes and fights through contact well. Where Franklin really turned heads was at the top of his routes. Even if coverage was sticky he drops his hips, has quick feet and uses leverage against the defender to get open. Franklin was consistently getting open and made some impressive catches in tight coverage. Franklin is your ideal slot guy and has some D3\ NAIA interest.
WR\DB David Ursey | 2022 | El Campo
Strong hands, the ability to create massive amounts of separation, and a high motor is what David Ursey showed on Sunday afternoon. Ursey is a crafty route runner and competes hard on every rep. He has good speed and can jump with the best of them. On a couple of jump balls, Ursey would make some DB’s look foolish when he would jump up and over them and snag the ball. On the other side of the ball, Ursey is sticky in coverage. He likes to be physical and get up in press coverage. He has smooth hips and stays close to the receiver all throughout the route. David Ursey is a talented and underrecruited athlete waiting to get his chance.
CB Justin Cottrell | 2023 | West Colombia
Justin Cottrell was putting the clamps on his opponents with his smooth hips, quick feet, and ability to stay on top of the receiver. He plays physical and in the receiver’s pocket so he’s never out of contention for the football. Cottrell was breaking up passes or just walling his receiver out the way. Cottrell was very impressive and has very precise technique which allowed him to lead his West Comlobia defense with 10 PBU’s and three INT this season.
CB Croix Riveria | 2023 | Brazoswood
One of the most underrecruited players in Brazoria county is Brazoswood cornerback, Croix Riveria. He has a solid frame, a strong lower body, and the technique to stay on the receiver. He’s very fluid in his back peddle and wasn’t giving up any ground in press coverage. Rivieria dominated with physicality and fluidity which for a corner isn’t something you find often. Coming off an impressive 2021 season, this offseason Riveria’s stock should continue to rise.
