At the beginning of the season, I thought this class of quarterbacks was not as impressive as the previous quarterback class, and boy was I wrong. Many signal-callers took massive jumps in their level of play. In this article, I will be giving you my top five quarterbacks of the 5A 2022 season. My rankings are based on stats, performance, arm talent, and team success. Feel free to message me on Twitter if you have a question or a different opinion. 1. [player_tooltip player_id="104081" first="JJ" last="Kohl"] (Ankeny) 2023 6’6 227 lbs Hudl Twitter Kohl was sensational this season. He had 26 total touchdowns along with 2,185 passing yards. After week two, he looked far calmer in the pocket, which allowed him to make higher-quality reads and throws. J.J. was excellent at throwing an outside fade to senior receiver Brady McCullough. I found it to be a very close decision between Kohl and Dailey, but after digging into many stats, Kohl came out on top. I am incredibly excited to see what Kohl does this summer and during the upcoming season! 2. [player_tooltip player_id="23947" first="Jaxon" last="Dailey"] (Southeast Polk) 2022 6’2 190 lbs Hudl Twitter Dailey capped off his remarkable high school career with a tremendous state championship win over bitter rival Ankeny. Dailey had 20 passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. He also passed for 1,865 passing yards. Dailey has a cannon for an arm, making multiple impressive back-shoulder fade throws that many high school quarterbacks struggle with. I do not have a doubt in my mind that Dailey can perform at Arkansas State. 3. [player_tooltip player_id="148360" first="Mason" last="Morrow"] (Valley) 2022 6’0 N/A lbs Hudl Twitter Morrow was the best playmaker out of all the quarterbacks in 5A. Morrow excelled at a Kylar Murray-like spin move to roll out of the pocket and it was honestly unstoppable this year. Morrow finished with 27 touchdowns to end the season. He is extraordinarily talented but did lack some consistency with his arm, which is why he is not above Dailey or Kohl. Morrow recently committed to Amherst to continue his football career. 4. [player_tooltip player_id="104099" first="Peyton" last="Rottinghaus"] (Urbandale) 2023 6´0 185 lbs Hudl Twitter Rottinghaus blew up this year after having a good (but not excellent) sophomore year for the Jayhawks last year. His deep ball looks effortless, and he has the strength to throw over safety’s heads. Rottinghaus finished with 22 passing touchdowns and 2,277 passing yards. So far, the only error in his game seems to be decision-making, but he is still very young and can change that as a senior next season. 5. [player_tooltip player_id="98642" first="Jack" last="Gilligan"] (Dubuque Senior) 2022 6’1 185 lbs Hudl Twitter Besides [player_tooltip player_id="104081" first="JJ" last="Kohl"], Gilligan likely was the most improved quarterback in Class 5A. Gilligan was not only an elite passer this season, but he showed the ability to take QB Power plays and bust them for 40+ yard runs. Gilligan had 23 touchdowns this season and was the only quarterback to pass for 2000+ yards and rush for 500+ yards. He will be an excellent get for whatever college wants him. HM: [player_tooltip player_id="243128" first="Carson" last="Blietz"], [player_tooltip player_id="243131" first="Brandon" last="Vlcko"], [player_tooltip player_id="243129" first="Noah" last="Pettinger"], [player_tooltip player_id="104089" first="Dallas" last="Sauser"], [player_tooltip player_id="24030" first="Jamison" last="Patton"], [player_tooltip player_id="247922" first="Drew" last="Larson"], [player_tooltip player_id="98656" first="McKade" last="Jelinek"], [player_tooltip player_id="104098" first="Jaxon" last="Smolik"] (Hurt Weeks 1-7)
