Sixty of the best juniors from around the state.
Numbers that won’t lie.
The lead up to Saturday’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl included Friday’s inaugural Joanne Langfitt Junior Showcase skills challenge. It gave those Class of 2023 standouts another way to gauge their growth and boost their recruiting stock.
The event featured official height and weight measurements for all 60 players, as well as competition in the combine. The invitation-only performances included several that stood out to everyone in attendance.
L-CONE
Only two players were able to run sub-7-second times in the L-Cone, a quick back-and-forth variety to the more standard three-cone.
Savionne Jones from Stratford (plenty more on him later) punched up a 6.97, only to be topped moments later by Beaufort’s Kacy Fields, who finished with a 6.94. The two players said they run the drill consistently. Fields, for instance, is part of a mentorship program in which they regularly run most of the combine events.
BROAD JUMP
This one was a relative blowout.
Although several player maxed out north of 100 inches, Ashley Ridge linebacker Christian Garland’s 116-inch jump on his first attempt was beat out only by his 118-inch effort on jump No. 2.
BENCH PRESS
Slinging around 225 pounds was made to look especially easy by a number of the big guys.
In total, six players reached 15 or more reps, including Savionne Jones (15), White Knoll’s Jesse Ross, Myrtle Beach’s Wade White Wade White 6'4" | 225 lbs | OL Myrtle Beach | 2023 State SC and Cane Bay’s Andre Mitchell (16) and Clinton’s Hezekiah Kinard (18).
But the heaviest lifter of the bunch was Buford’s Justin Pardue (pictured) who topped the list with 21 reps.
40 YARD DASH
We’ll get to the blazers of the bunch momentarily, but a special mention is deserved for Myrtle Beach offensive lineman Wade White Wade White 6'4" | 225 lbs | OL Myrtle Beach | 2023 State SC . The Seahawk tackle hit 4.77 seconds in his 40, an impressive showing for the 6-foot-4, 225-pounder.
White Knoll defensive back Jesse Ross was one of two players to break 4.5. He did it twice, first with a 4.46 and then once more with a 4.49.
As far as absolute burners go, look no further than Stratford’s Savionne Jones. He pushed out a 4.43 on his opening run and followed it up with a 4.47 on his second.
