Let’s get into the notes and standouts from the contest:
Catawba Ridge
- Sophomore RB Tyler Jones (@TylerJones14_) – Jones won’t wow you with speed, but he is physical and knows where to find the green grass. He was the focal point of the night for the Copperhead offense as he scored three touchdowns, including the game winner to cap off his huge night with a 12-yard TD run to secure the win with 5:53 to play in the fourth.
“He has been the workhorse for us and I don’t know how many carries he had, but man, we gave him the ball a lot. When you can run downhill like that and be that physical, especially in this kind of weather, we talked about it all week, we knew it was going to be cold and the team that was willing to get in there and bang all night long and he was willing to do that. He’s a great kid and a great running back.” – Catawba Ridge head coach Zac Lendyak on Jones’s performance
- Sophomore QB Jadyn Davis Jadyn Davis 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Providence Day | 2024 State NC (@iamjadyndavis) – Davis looked sharp in the early going. He connected with his go-to target WR Trevor Testerman Trevor Testerman 6'4" | 185 lbs | WR Catawba Ridge | 2022 SC as he was wide open on a slant for a touchdown in the first quarter to begin the scoring. Davis can scramble around and make plays with his feet as we’ve seen previously.
- Senior DL Asa Johnson Asa Johnson 5'11" | 260 lbs | DL Catawba Ridge | 2022 State SC (@Asajohnson55) – Johnson was disruptive as he’s been throughout the year in the inside run game. There was one play where he jumped the snap and got into the backfield before the ball carrier had a chance to get going.
- Senior WR/CB Jacobie Henderson Jacobie Henderson 6'0" | 185 lbs | WR Catawba Ridge | 2022 State SC (@cobieh10) – Henderson made a sideline catch for a huge gain down the right sideline showing great concentration in the first quarter.
- Senior WR Trevor Testerman Trevor Testerman 6'4" | 185 lbs | WR Catawba Ridge | 2022 SC (@Testerman2022) – Testerman can be described as a clutch slot guy who will make the routine catches and knows to get up field quickly after making those catches.
Westwood
- Senior RB Julian Miligan – Milligan was impressive as he can get the tough yards when he touches it. He had a long run that once he got to the second level, it was a touchdown which tied the game with 2:51 to play before halftime.
- Senior QB Cam Brown – Brown excels in making throws on the run. One example of that was when he hit Zyere Lee in space on a first down play in the first quarter. On the other hand, when the play breaks down, he will take off with it and run.
- Junior WR Jayden Harrison – Harrison will be a problem next year for opponents in the Midlands with his ability to stretch the field and make tough catches. He had a 64-yard catch for a TD in the second quarter.
- Senior WR Zyere Lee – Lee made a critical grab on a 4th and 3 to keep a drive alive in the third quarter. He impressed us with his ability to help the quarterback out and get open when the plays broke down.
Additional notes and observations
- Westwood’s Jordan Jenkins had an interception down in the red zone, thwarting a Catawba Ridge scoring opportunity in the second quarter. He was also used on offense and found a hole in the zone on a catch in the 4th quarter
- Catawba Ridge’s DeLante McAllister had a sack of Cam Brown on 4th down in the third quarter when the Redhawks tried to go for it.
