When the matchups for the Sub-State round were released, it was a must to be in attendance for this huge rivalry game. The stage was set, The War on 24 Part II with the winner advancing to the 2A State Championship game. Silver Lake (9-2) came in looking for payback after losing to the Bulldogs back in Week 7, and Rossville (11-0) was determined to make it back to state to defend their title.
Given all the build up for this game, the final score was surprising. After a stalemate in the first quarter, Rossville’s offense would start clicking and their defense and special teams took advantage of a few turnovers. The Eagles just couldn’t find their footing and finish drives, while Rossville controlled the time of possession through most of the game. The Bulldogs would go on to beat their rival for the second time this season and make it back-to-back state title appearances.

Here’s a quick recap of the top performers from this 2A Sub-State matchup (Unofficial Stats).
Offense:
Corey Catron – Rossville, RB, Class of ’22
This senior tailback looked impressive last night. Catron walks away with Player of the Game after rushing for 168 yards on 21 carriers with three scores. He helped the Bulldogs control the clock, as he found ways to keep moving the chains. There’d be times when Catron was bottled up and he’d somehow squirt through a pile for extra yards. Catron should see some offers come his way as Rossville continues their quest for back-to-back state titles.
[player_tooltip player_id="35598" first="Torrey" last="Horak"] – Rossville, QB, Class of ’22
It was nice finally getting the chance to see this dynamic lefty play. After a slow start their first few possessions, Horak and the Bulldogs got things rolling. The 21st ranked prospect in our Class of ’22 rankings went on to account for 272 yards of total offense with two rushing touchdowns.
[player_tooltip player_id="91395" first="Daigan" last="Kruger"] – Silver Lake, QB, Class of ’22
Kruger played well in Silver Lake’s last meeting against Rossville, but this Sub-State matchup just wasn’t his night. The Eagles would put together a few drives that went deep into Rossville territory, but they couldn’t capitalize on it. Kruger ended the game going 18 of 36 for 191 yards and one touchdown and added 35 yards on the ground.
Gannon Remer – Silver Lake, WR, Class of ’22
Even though Silver Lake’s passing game couldn’t get into a rhythm, Remer managed to consistently make plays when the ball was thrown his direction. The senior ran some sharp routes and was able to get open quite a bit in the middle of the field. He finished the contest with nine catches for 96 yards.
Defense:
Raphael Cooney – Rossville, LB, Class of ’22
Rossville’s defense as a whole played really well throughout the game. But Cooney came up big on a series in the second half. Silver Lake made it into the redzone at one point, and Cooney got pressure on Kruger three times in a row, forcing a key turnover on downs. The senior would go on to rack up four total tackles with a sack and a batted pass.
Kale Frehe – Silver Lake, LB, Class of ’22
Frehe was a player on the Eagles’ defense that stood out in this one. The times that Silver Lake did slow down Catron, Frehe was involved on the tackle. He was one of the leading tacklers for the Eagles with nine total on the night.
