Every program across the country looks to Georgia to find playmaking linebackers, and often, some of the top linebacker prospects in the country hail from the peach state. In a major passing era of high school football, it’s important linebackers know how to both tackle properly, and cover in space. You have to be tough, fast, athletic, and maybe most importantly, you have to lead. There are plenty of 2023 linebackers who check all those boxes.
Here are some of the top 2023 linebacker prospects to know about in the metro-Atlanta area…
Dion Crawford – Collins Hill
One of the more productive linebackers in the state, the 6-foot-2 215-pounder flies across the field and constantly finds a way to make an impact. He was one of the state’s leading tacklers last season and is doing it again this season as a junior. Leading an undefeated Collins Hill squad, Crawford has made 60 total tackles this year along with 12.5 TFLs. He’s also found the quarterback 11.5 times. He’s smart, instinctive, and as sure a tackler as you’ll find in Gwinnett County.
Raul Agguire
The 6-foot-1 220-pounder from Fayetteville can do it all at middle linebacker. He’s great in coverage for someone his age, but he’s also known as one of the biggest hitters in the region. Aguirre is coming off a great sophomore season where he controlled the middle of the field for one of the top defenses in the entire state. If anyone came across the middle, Aguirre finds a way to make a play. He shows great instincts for a middle linebacker and sniffed out runs on a consistent basis. Whether he was going sideline to sideline or stuffing the middle of the trenches, the four-star always found a way to get to the ball carrier. He holds offers from Georgia, Auburn, Arkansas, FSU, among others.
The Creekside Seminoles are off to an excellent 8-1 start and they have plenty of D1 talent on the roster. One of them is junior pass-rusher Javeon Miller who has been terrorizing QBs all season so far. Like Harris, Miller’s size won’t blow you away, but he just has a knack for getting into the backfield. He’s lined up against some quality offenses so far, but nobody has been able to stop him. Miller has found the QB 20 times so far to go along with 64 total tackles. He’s as productive as it gets and uses his quick hands and feet to get around bigger tackles. Look for Miller to be one of the state’s leading sack artists by the end of the season.
Dee Crayton Dee Crayton 6'2" | 210 lbs | LB Denmark | 2023 State GA – Denmark
One of the most dynamic players in the region, Crayton is an impressive two-way player who has been a tackling machine so far this season. The 6-foot-2 215-pounder is extremely versatile and can line up at middle linebacker, outside linebacker, and blitz from anywhere eon the field. He has a nose for the football and has enough speed to go sideline to sideline to get to the ball carrier. He’s great at getting after the passer but is reliable when dropping back into coverage as well. He runs well, and when he meets the ball carrier, he’s going to leave a bruise. He’s looking to lead Denmark to a region title this weekend and a deep playoff run later this month in 7A.
Grant Godfrey Grant Godfrey 6'3" | 200 lbs | LB North Gwinnett | 2023 State GA – North Gwinnett
One of the top 2023 linebackers in Gwinnett County, Godfrey has great bloodlines as his father used to play for the Georgia Bulldogs back in the day. Now it’s Grant’s turn to make a name for himself, and that’s exactly what he did after a big sophomore season last fall. The 6-foot-3 200-pounder has made 53 total tackles so far and 7 TFLs. He’s also made four sacks this year and one INT. He shows impressive athleticism, overall instincts, and he knows how to wrap up properly. He’s another impressive Gwinnett County linebacker to know in the 2023 class.
