If you want the best football that the state of Florida has to give you, this is the time of year that you need to be seated in some stadium, watching the stars of tomorrow on display today.
Having the pleasure of seeing some of the top athletes in the country perform year round – at camps, combines and 7-on-7 events – is what this is all about.
So, as we are now at the state semifinals, we look back at some of the standouts who made a lasting impression in the region finals:
Quarterback <strong>DJ Moore</strong> connecting with <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="50210" first="Kade" last="Frew"]</strong> and <strong>Patrick Green</strong> early and the Bulldogs moved to the 4A state semifinals next Friday at Cocoa with a 56-7 win against South Walton.
Baker County's junior defensive end <strong>Orlando Holland</strong> had 7 sacks as his team moved into the 5A state semifinals with a convincing 26-10 win against Crawfordville Wakulla.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="50051" first="Jaylon" last="Glover"]</strong> Ran for 200 yards and a score as Lakeland Lake Gibson continued to roll with a state semifinal win against Melbourne.
Gainesville Buchholz earned a trip to the state 7A semifinals as <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="128356" first="Creed" last="Whittemore"]</strong> threw for 308 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, UCF commit <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="108637" first="Quan" last="Lee"]</strong> caught eight passes for 152 yards and a score, beating Ponte Vedra Nease.
Lakeland Christian 2023 standout <strong>Dre' Hughes</strong> had an interception, 2 pass breakups, a blocked punt and two tackles in a come-from-behind win over North Palm Beach Benjamin.
Miami Central junior defensive end <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="127997" first="Rueben" last="Bain"],</strong> regarded as one of the best in the nation, came up with four sacks – giving him a team record 27 – as Miami Central rolled over previously unbeaten Miami Killian, 39-13.
Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons won a thriller against Miami Gulliver Prep as <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="128435" first="Jesse" last="Anderson"] </strong>caught 8 balls, QB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="128343" first="Dylan" last="Rizk"]</strong> scored three times.
Sebring junior kicker <strong>Jean Carlos</strong> booted a last second field goal that boosted the team into the 5A state semifinals.
One of the many players who continues to get it done for the Miami Christopher Columbus Explorers. In last Friday's Region 4-8A title game against Miami Palmetto, <strong>Denim Edwards</strong> carried the ball 25 times for more than 140 yards and a touchdown. He was a major factor in beating the Panthers for the second time this season.
Senior <strong>Travis Bates</strong> ran for 197 yards to help Tampa Berkeley Prep remain unbeaten with a 35-21 win over Clearwater Central Catholic.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="128022" first="Daquayvious" last="Sorey"]</strong> made play after play on the defensive side of the ball and the offense did what was needed as Chipley stopped Baker's Wing-T attack and beat the defending 1A state champions, 22-7. Plays such as <strong>Neal Adams, Antonio Lewis </strong>and <strong>Trace Weaver</strong> all made an impact. Baker junior standout RB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="128424" first="Kayleb" last="Wagner"]</strong> had 157 yards.
<strong>Michael Votta, [player_tooltip player_id="128782" first="Jordan" last="Jean"]-Luc,</strong> who finished with 134 scrimmage yards on 12 touches, <strong>Rich Mellien, Preston Shemansky</strong> and <strong>Ty Keller</strong> (10-for-22, 168 yards, 4 TDs; 1 rush, 11 yards) all had a hand in Naples First Baptist Academy's 51-28 win over St. Petersburg Northside Christian.
<strong>Luke Knight</strong> threw touchdown passes to <strong>Junior Vandeross</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="111473" first="Jaydn" last="Girard"]</strong>. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="128419" first="Joquez" last="Smith"]</strong> ran for three scores. And <strong>Drew Woodaz</strong> recovered a punt he blocked in the end zone for a touchdown as unbeaten Tampa Jesuit rolled to a 42-0 win against Tampa Hillsborough. The Tigers have outscored their playoff opponents by a combined 141-9.
<strong>Montrevious Lloyd</strong> ran for a touchdown to tie the game and <strong>Anthony Colandrea</strong> threw for a score that put the St. Petersburg Lakewood Spartans ahead for good in a 21-7 win against Clewiston.
Cocoa standout RB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="50011" first="O.J." last="Ross"]</strong> was once again the difference for the Tigers – with 158 yards and 3 scores in a win over previously unbeaten The Villages Charter.
