The defensive backfield is one of the hardest positions to play on the football field and the following players will look to lockdown some serious offers next year.
John Pargo Jr John Pargo Jr 5'10" | 175 lbs | DB Creighton Prep | 2023 State NE . | Creighton Prep | 5’10″ 175lbs
50 Tackles | 4 INTs | 4 Punt Blocks
John is a physical defensive back who led the team in interceptions and blocked punts. He has no problem jamming receivers, making them work their tails off to get open. John has a high football IQ and is a bonified ball hawk who can tackle with the best. John has got multiple schools looking at him including all the Dakotas, Northern Illinois, Columbia, Dartmouth and Wyoming. Its only a matter of time before some power schools come knocking!
Caleb Benning | Westside | 5’11″ 170lbs
55 Tackles | 4 INTs | 1 Fumble Recovery
Caleb is a solid size defensive back who is getting stronger. He is well disciplined on the field and covers receivers like a weighted blanket. His maturity on the field is one of the reason for Westside’s success, as he takes away an entire side of the field for an offense with solid coverage and tackling. 45 of his 55 tackles were unassisted. He has an underrated playmaking ability with the ball in his hands. For only being a sophmore, his demeanor is all business as he shows as one heck of a coachable player! It doesn’t seem like there has been much college interest yet but I am positive it will pick up, especially as it approaches his class of 2024!

Jeremiah Truitt Jeremiah Truitt 5'10" | 165 lbs | DB Omaha Westside | 2023 State NE | Omaha Central | 5’10″ 165lbs
23 Tackles | 4 PBUs
Jeremiah does not have gaudy stats but Truitt Island gets very lonely when you are out there on it. He has speed in his feet and his hands. He flies the the ball in the open field and his recovery speed could be the one of the best in the state. Jeremiah has great instincts and can seemingly run the routes for the receivers. His anticipation equates to a strong break to the ball. South Dakota and South Dakota State have shown interest along with Wayne St and Dartmouth.
Brock Murtaugh Brock Murtaugh 6'2" | 200 lbs | DB Millard South | 2023 State NE | Millard South | 6’2″ 185lbs
55 Tackles | 7 PBUs | 2 Forced Fumbles | 3 INTs
Brock is a straight athlete on the field. He can play multiple positions, spending most of his time at Safety, but is big enough to go down in the box and play Linebacker. His athleticism and physicality is very mature and he already seems ready for the next level. Brock has a quick burst after he diagnoses a play and is like a Mack truck to the ball. Playing Safety, he punishes receivers and has them surveying for him before they catch over the middle of the field. He is a real Thumper! Brock has received interest from North Dakota St., Wyoming, Wayne St., South Dakota and Northern Illinois.

Tj Fitzpatrick | Plattsmouth | 6’0″ 165lbs
27 Tackles | 2 Tackles for Loss | 9 INTs
Tj finished second in state in interceptions. He understands how to use the sideline as an extra defender and has an amazing ability to play the ball in the air. He has a good height and long arms which allow him to stay in contact with his opponent and then make a play. Tj is an intelligent defender who knows to keep an eye on the backfield to see if a play is being tipped and then break on it. I have not seen any real interest from colleges just yet but he will have plenty of opportunity next year to get noticed!
Seth Gaswick | Chadron | 6’2″ 175lbs
50 Tackles | 2 Fumble Recoveries | 5 INTs
Like Brock, Seth has tremendous size for defensive back. He plays a lot of Safety but can slide into the box to a Linebacker position also. He and Brock are similar players in different areas of the state. Good speed, athletic and physical. Seth has a tremendous burst when he is catching a ball or breaking to a play. Seth has receiver’s hands and was tied for 4th in the state in interceptions. Seth is a bit of a diamond in the rough way out in Chadron, and could pay huge dividends in 2023 for his school and future!
