While 7A football typically tends to dominate the headlines, we also like to keep tabs on the 6A playoff match ups that take place as well, as these are usually good contests too. Below, you can check out a few of our favorite games from last week, in which all of them were nail biters because both teams arrived to play solid football.
John’s Creek (31) vs Rome (27)
During this heavy weight match up, the game had fans on their seats up until the very end. Throughout the first quarter, the teams appeared to be evenly matched, as they managed to both be tied 7-7. Following this, the second quarter began to heat up, as John’s Creek scored 10 points, to Rome’s 7. This caused the teams to go into half time with John’s Creek being up 17-14. Once the Third quarter began, the teams were neck and neck on both sides of the ball, finishing with 2 more TD’s for John’s Creek, and 13 more points for Rome. By the end of this game, a slower 2nd quarter for Rome spelled defeat for them, as they would eventually be unable to make these points up, thus losing 31-27.
Lovejoy (19) vs Richmond Hill (14)
During this close game, the difference was not decided until the 4th quarter, and the lead changes in the game could have been viewed as enough to make all fans in attendance very nervous. To start, Lovejoy scored 13 points in the 1st quarter, and Richmond Hill responded in the 2nd with a TD of their own. Because of this, going into halftime, the score was 13-7, with Richmond Hill taking a 14-13 lead once the 3rd quarter came around. Unfortunately for them, Lovejoy proved to be too much, as they managed to overcome 2 scoreless quarters to put up 6 points in the 4th quarter to win the game.
Douglas County (24) vs Riverwood (17)
In this match up, both team’s had a quarter of football in which they seemed to not be able to put any points on the board. Fortunately for Douglas County, this quarter came for them at the beginning of the game, whereas Riverwood would have this occur at the end of the game. Entering into halftime, Riverwood saw themselves down 17-3, and would eventually score 14 more points, with touchdowns being spread out in the remaining 2 quarters. This would not be enough though, as Douglas County also scored in the 3rd quarter, making the score 24-17 by the end of the game.
Shiloh (19) vs Allatoona (14)
Even though Allatoona seemed out of it almost all game, it was impossible to count them out. Following the 1st quarter, they were unable to put up more than 7 points until the 4th quarter. Due to this, the team’s went into half time with a 19-7 score due to Allatoona’s inability to stop Shiloh’s offense in the 2nd quarter, in which they were able to put up 12 points. By the end of the contest, this would prove to be enough to put away Allatoona, as they were unable to close the gap in what became a one score game in the 4th quarter.
Evans (19) vs Houston County (10)
This match up ended up being one of the more underrated games of the weekend, as both Evans, and Houston County seemed to play their heart out. Going into half time, one could imagine that the game was over for Houston County, as Evans put up 19 unanswered points. Houston County must not have gotten the memo that they were supposed to be finished, because they managed to put up 10 unanswered points in the 3rd quarter. They, along with Evans High, would not score any more points for the rest of the game. Even despite their strong defensive stand, their efforts were not enough, as they fell 9 point short of a strong second half comeback.
