For my Level Four live scouting trip I went back to the Division 5 bracket to watch one of my seven underdogs that I believed could make a run in the WIAA playoffs in #5 Mayville High School. They took on #4 seed Belleville at McFarland High School on Friday night with a trip to Madison and Camp Randall Stadium on the line! It was a great game full of stretches where each team was able to gain control of the momentum and do exactly what they wanted to do no offense. Mayville wanted to control the ball and pound the rock, while Belleville preferred to take to the air on the arm of QB [player_tooltip player_id="223711" first="Trevor" last="Syse"]. Before we get into the stars of the game that college coaches are going to want to check out, let’s quickly run through how the game played out! Game Recap This game started off with the Mayville defense taking an early control of the game when DL/LB/RB Ty Hockers disengaged with his blocker and made the TFL on 4th & 1 to force the turnover on downs on the opening drive of the game. Using that early momentum, Mayville went to the ground early and often with Ty Hockers and RB Blake Schraufnagel. It was Schraufnagel who was able to finish off the drive as he sprinted around left tackle and just got inside the corner of the endzone for the 7-0 lead. After a quick 3 & out by the Belleville offense, Mayville’s ground game once again did what they wanted and quickly moved down the field. With 4:33 remaining in the first quarter, Blake Schraufnagel continued what turned out to be an amazing night as he found a lane and went 9 yards untouched for the 14-0 lead. Just when it seemed like Mayville was going to dominate this matchup from start to finish, Belleville found their explosive offense with their third drive. RB Dylan Posthuma took a sweep around right tackle on the first snap of the drive, and let his speed and vision take over as he weaved his way through the defense to the Mayville 4. One play later Posthuma went up the middle for the score cutting the deficit to 14-7. Belleville continued taking back the momentum of the game on defense. They forced a Mayville punt, and looked ready to tie this game up. However, the first quarter came to a close when Mayville TE/DE Bradley Bushke stuffed a run on 4th & 1 at the Belleville 39. The second quarter began with Mayville taking over again. RB Blake Scraufnagel continued his impressive night with an 8 yard TD run following behind the block of an impressive 6’6" 315 lbs ’23 LT Hewsten Steger. It seemed like Belleville was going to have a hard time climbing back into this game because of the dominant Mayville run game. However, there was absolutely no quit to this Belleville team. They came out on their next drive and emptied the playbook. On 4th & 5, Belleville ran what looked like a jet sweep, but the WR pitched it back to WR Carson Syse on a jet sweep reverse. Instead of running with it, though, Carson threw it downfield to QB [player_tooltip player_id="223711" first="Trevor" last="Syse"]. Trevor made some defenders miss in the open field and then raced into the endzone to cut the lead to 21-13. The game continued to be in Belleville’s control as they forced a quick 3 & out punt. The punt was perfectly kicked and downed inside the Belleville 10. That wasn’t an issue for Belleville’s big play offense. QB [player_tooltip player_id="223711" first="Trevor" last="Syse"] dropped back and found his receiver running open down the field and hit him for a 95 yard TD with 3:57 remaining in the half and bringing the score to 21-19 after the failed two point conversion. That was the score heading into the halftime break. Mayville started the second half on offense and slowly regained control of the game with their ground attack. It was impressive to watch as they slowly moved down the field and killed the clock. They eventually worked their way down to the Belleville 1 where, guess who, Blake Schraufnagel punched in his 4th TD of the night putting Mayville up 28-19. Belleville looked to answer, and were able to quickly get out to midfield. Unfortunately for them, the pass rush from Mayville killed the drive. Three straight sacks on second, third, and fourth down turned the ball over on downs. The sacks were made first by Bradley Bushke, then by Zane Vetter, followed by a gang sack on fourth down. The quarter came to a close with Mayville on offense and continuing to run the ball and kill the clock. It was impressive to see them switch to this ball control offense from the quick rushing attack they used in the first half. The 4th quarter opened in a very predictable way at this point. With Blake Schraufnagel punching in his 5th TD of the night giving Mayville a 35-19 lead with 10:50 remaining in the 4th. Belleville’s offense knew they needed to come up with a way to stay in this game, so they once again dug deep into the playbook and came out with a double pass! QB [player_tooltip player_id="223711" first="Trevor" last="Syse"] dumped it off to WR Carson Syse who went deep to WR [player_tooltip player_id="182099" first="Anthony" last="Nolden"] for a 71 yard TD strike! This put the score at Mayville: 35 Belleville: 25 with 10:40 to play. That was as close as Belleville would get the rest of the night. RB Blake Schraufnagel finished the night the only way he knew how. With his 6th TD of the night! It was his most impressive too. He ran right over a defender, then stiff armed another on his awy to the 20 yard score and 42-25 lead. Belleville gave one last ditch effort, but they turned it over on downs at the Mayville 9 with 5:00 to play. The Mayville rushing attack easily milked that time away sending Mayville on to Madison for the State Finals! Players of the Game Blake Scraufnagel, ’23 RB/LB- Mayville Stat Line: 43 Carries, 270 Yards, 6 TDs The 6’1" 180 lbs junior dominated this game. He played both ways, but his biggest impact was clearly on the offensive side of the ball where he scored all six of his team’s TDs! Blake is a solid next level prospect to keep an eye on over the next year. He showed off consistent vision as several of his scores came between the tackles, yet he was able to find the endzone untouched because he was able to find the paths of least resistance. When he had to, though, Blake was able to show off plenty of contact balance, and power. His last TD demonstrated that perfectly as he ran straight through contact and then kept another defender at bay with a strong stiff arm. D2/D3 programs should have this dude on their radars starting today if they don’t already. Bradley Bushke, ’23 TE/DL- Mayville Stat Line: 2 Recpetions, 26 Yards, Multiple Sacks Bradley is the opposite of Blake. He too played both ways, but Bushke was most impressive off the edge on defense. The 6’4" 180 lbs DE demonstrated a consistently effective first step that allowed him to get the leverage he needed as he ran the loop around the edge to the QB. The junior had a very high motor as he made plays throughout the entire night. He also seemed to always step up in the biggest moments, like third/fourth down sacks or TFLs on 4th down. I’m going to be very interested in seeing how Bradley continues to grow and fill out. He already has the length needed to succeed, and he uses it well. Name to know, and I can’t wait to see what he does against Aquinas this week in the championship round! Braeden Vollmer, ’22 RB/DB- Mayville Stat Line: 12 Carries, 75 Yards, 2 Receptions, 28 Yards The 6’ 180 lbs senior impressed me most with his physical play style as a ball carrier and receiver. I noted it down almost every time he touched the ball that Braeden had no issue being the one delivering the hits to defenders instead of absorbing the hits. That led to a good amount of his yards coming after contact, and it helped set the tone in the trenches because Mayville wanted to do one thing, and that is run the ball. Vollmer did a great job stepping up and keeping the rhythm of the offense going when they didn’t go to Schraufnagel. Check him out. I believe Vollmer can play at the next level. Hewsten Steger, ’23 OL- Mayville Stat Line: 400+ Yards of Offense The 6’6" 315 lbs junior OT was an impressive physical specimen. He had a mostly clean frame for the amount of size he is carrying. Steger really gets to show off his traits in the run heavy offense of Mayville. At the first level, Steger has the length and strength to land an effective initial punch and then drive DL off the ball with ease. Sometimes even his initial punch was enough to get the space needed for the RBs to slip through. Hewsten also was effective at getting up to the second level. He is able to quickly get to LBs and his size alone made it hard for LBs to get around him to make plays. When he was able to get his hands on them it was even more impossible for the LB to effect the play. Hewsten is a raw prospect, but he has tools that could be developed into a solid OL prospect! Jackson Wade, ’22 OL- Mayville Stat Line: 400+ Yards of Offense Wade was an athlete I didn’t know much about coming into the night, but the 6’3" 245 lbs senior OL kept catching my eyes over and over. Jackson carries that weight with ease and can easily continue to add more. Speaking of ease, Jackson moves so smoothly and easily as he was able to get to the second level in a blink of an eye opening up running lanes and cutting off pursuit all night long. He can translate that quick first step into an effective punch and does a good job playing with a wide base so he can maximum his strength to drive DL off the ball. He will need time to continue to fill out, but I recommend watching him in his state matchup this week. I believe he can play at the next level. Ty Hockers, ’22 RB/LB- Mayville Stat Line: 4 Carries, 23 Yards The 6’2" 245 lbs senior was all over the field Friday night. He was carrying the ball, lead blocking, playing DL, playing LB, and he made plays in each one of those positions and scenarios. On defense, Hockers made his biggest impact early on from the DL position when he got the TFL on 4th down after using his strength to break through the block attempt of the OL. At LB, Hockers made it very difficult for Belleville to establish any sort of run game. Especially between the tackles where he was roaming. On offense, Hockers used that size and strength to set the tone. It took a team effort to drag him down, and he was able to deliver key blocks to spring the other backs for big plays. Check this dude out! [player_tooltip player_id="223711" first="Trevor" last="Syse"], ’22 QB- Belleville Stat Line: 18/25, 241 Yards, 1 TD, 1 Reception, 40 Yards, 1 TD Trevor did everything he could to help keep Belleville in this game. The 6’2" 185 lbs senior signal caller put together an impressive mix of quick passes, and timely deep shots. It kept his team in the game, and it allowed me to get a good look at his accuracy to every level of the field. Safe to say that the accuracy carried throughout the range of his arm consistently. Trevor is also a solid athlete, and he used that in a multitude of ways. One way was that he was able to move in the pocket really well and buy time with his legs. He also was able to get involved in the trick plays, like the jet sweep reverse pass where he hauled in his receiving TD. Syse was able to make defenders miss in the open field and had the speed to get to the endzone. Carson Syse, ’22 WR- Belleville Stat Line: 5 Receptions, 125 Yards, 1 TD, 2/2, 112 Yards, 2 TDs The 6’1" 185 lbs senior athlete had a very good game on Friday night. He was the receiver who hauled in the 95 yard TD pass that got Belleville all the way back into the game in the first half. Syse has the frame to win on the outside, and he proved he could. That 95 yard TD made it very clear that he has enough speed to be an option for a team at the D3 level. He also was able to win with short routes where the windows are tightest. He has the route running skills to be able to create separation on those short routes, and he did a good job getting open when his QB was scrambling. Potential name to check out. Dylan Posthuma, ’22 RB- Belleville Stat Line: 4 Carries, 67 Yards, 1 TD, 1 Reception, 3 Yards Dylan was the initial playmaker that first got Belleville out of the hole they were in early in the game. It was the speed of the 5’11" 175 lbs senior. That long speed resulted in a 60+ yard gain. His elusiveness in the open field also helped him get a good chunk of those yards as well. Dylan also had his named called on defense several times as he got involved in stopping the Mayville rushing attack. He is a potential D3 ATH to check out. Could fill a couple different roles and has the speed to play.
