Several outstanding performances highlighted the first round, a No. 4 seed went on the road and notched an upset, and the favorite for the Upper State title notched yet another shutout. Here's a look at what's in store for the second round in Class A.
<strong>No. 2 C.A. Johnson (6-3) at No. 1 Southside Christian (9-0)</strong>
The Green Hornets blanked Wagener-Salley 32-0 in a first-round win. C.A. Johnson has been led by [player_tooltip player_id="91245" first="Isom" last="Harris"] and <strong>Dawan Rice</strong>, who have combined for more than 1,500 yards of offense.
Southside Christian recorded its sixth shutout in nine games this year, blasting Williston-Elko 38-0. [player_tooltip player_id="89349" first="Ja’Corey" last="Martin"] has run the offense to perfection for the Sabres, and the defense has allowed just 28 points all season.
<strong>No. 3 McBee (3-5) at No. 1 Calhoun County (6-4)</strong>
The Panthers ran their option attack to a T last week, blasting Ware Shoals 62-14 in the first round. Backs <strong>James Goodie</strong>, <strong>Evan Sullivan</strong> and <strong>Evan Talbert</strong> rushed for two touchdowns each, as did QB <strong>Trevor Trull</strong>.
The Saints were an early entry into the second round, as first-round opponent Military Magnet elected to end their season early. Calhoun County will rely on brothers <strong>Russell Brunson</strong>, a North All-Star, and <strong>Justen Brunson</strong>.
<strong>No. 4 Great Falls (7-3) at No. 2 Ridge Spring-Monetta (8-2)</strong>
Great Falls went on the road in the first round, upsetting No. 2 seed Dixie and winning its first playoff game in eight seasons. The Red Devils leaned on <strong>Foxx Moore</strong>, who rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw a two-point conversion pass in the win.
Ridge Spring-Monetta, meanwhile, rolled through their first round matchup, blasting Whitmire 48-0. <strong>Dantrell Weave</strong>r was the catalyst for the Trojans’ offense, rushing for 219 yards on just 11 carries.
<strong>No. 3 McCormick (4-4) at No. 1 Lamar (7-3)</strong>
McCormick rolls into Lamar after a 54-24 win over Denmark-Olar in the first round. The story for the Chiefs was [player_tooltip player_id="91145" first="A’Chean" last="Durant"]. He racked up 330 yards and 6 touchdowns in the dominant win.
Lamar survived against Blackville-Hilda, scoring a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to win 30-18. The Foxes were led by <strong>Patrick Anderson</strong>, who rushed for 163 yards and a pair of touchdowns, scoring one and adding a critical two-point conversion in the pivotal fourth quarter.
