Here are some impressive running backs to know in 5A as the playoffs unfold…
Dallas Johnson – Eastside
One of the most productive Atlanta-are backs from this past season, the athletic 6-foot-0 175-pounder from Covington had a monster senior season this fall, rushing for 1,517 yards on 189 carries (8 yards per carry) and 17 touchdowns. In only 10 games this season, Johnson averaged over 150 yards per game this past season, leading Eastside to a 7-3 regular season record. His high school season is on the line, and after an incredible senior season so far, look for Johnson to give it everything he has with each carry on Friday night and beyond.
Damari Alston Damari Alston 5'11" | 205 lbs | RB Woodward Academy | 2022 State GA – Woodward Academy
One of the top 2022 running backs across the South, the future Auburn Tiger had an outstanding season, rushing 167 times for 1,450 yards and 23 touchdowns. He’s a threat to score every time he touches the ball, with enough power and speed to run through defenses on a weekly basis in 5A. Once he got through the line of scrimmage, there weren’t many his season who had a chance to bring Alston down. He runs well in open space and has enough speed to outrun most defenders. He showed great balance as well with excellent feet on the sideline. He’ll hope to lead 10-0 Woodward Academy to a home playoff victory against Veterans on Friday night.
Malcolm Brown – Warner Robins
The Demons are a true contender in the 5A this year and Brown is a big reason why. One of the top programs in the state at the moment, The Demons ran Brown a lot this year, and for good reason. The 5-foot-10 180-pounder has carried the ball 199 times this year for an impressive 1,332 yards and 17 touchdowns. He’s been a major weapon for a Warner Robins offense that scored at least 48 points eight different times this year. Brown, one of the top backs in all of 5A, rushed for over 100 yards in every game but two this year.
Trey Ransom – Jackson County
One of the top running backs in the Athens area, Ransom has quietly had a very goos senior season this fall, leading Jackson County to the playoffs. He put the offense on his back this year, rushing for 1,300 yards and finding the endzone 15 times. He’s a quick back who can get downhill in a hurry and take off past the defense. When he’s on, he can really take over a game. Ransom had games of 152, 160, 265, and 301 this season. He’s absolutely a running back to keep an eye on who could likely play his final high school game on Friday night.
Cartevious Norton – Ware County
One of the top backs in Southeast Georgia, the big 5-foot-11 220-pounder breaks a lot of tackles, and thanks to Castellanos, never has defense solely focused on him. He’s been able to pound and wear defenses down in the area, and he’s lit up the stat sheet in the process. So far this season, Norton has rushed 117 times for 1082 yards and 10 touchdowns. He rushed for over 100 yards in every game but one in the regular season and doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. The Gators are a state title contender this year, and if they’re going to make it all the way, they’ll need Norton to be at his best.
