Continue ReadingTexas’ 6A region II district 15 is absolutely loaded with a variety of talent at the quarterback position. Defenses had to constantly be on top of their game with the dual-threat quarterbacks in this district. A couple of these quarterbacks are in the playoffs right now improving their stock.
At the top of the district in passing was Klein Cain’s dual-threat quarterback Carson Roper Carson Roper 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB Klein Cain | 2022 State TX (6’3 190lbs). Through 12 games he threw for 2,825 yards, 27 TD, and seven interceptions. Roper throws a very pretty deep with great anticipation. Roper has solid footwork that he uses well to help push the ball with velocity. In the pocket, he is calm and maintains his composure through the pass rush. When things did break down he has the scrambling ability as well as the ability to work the read-option game. Roper put up four games of over 100 yards on the ground this season and finished with 901 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. The senior appears to be flying under the radar with no major offers.
Coming out of Tomball High School is Cale Hellums. A true dual-threat with an explosive style, Hellums put up 1,796 yards, 20 TD, and four interceptions through the air. Hellums has overall a balanced arm. He is accurate with his placement and also has the type of arm to push the ball 50 yards down the field. His rushing ability is what truly separates him from most other quarterbacks. Off 150 carries Hellums posted 1,285 yards, 10 TD, 8.6 ypc, and had five games over 100 yards on the ground. Even more impressive was his ball security with no fumbles on the season. He finished 2nd in passing and 3rd in rushing in district 15. Tomball High School will be sad to see their star dual-threat gunslinger graduate as he leads them through the playoffs, but he will be onto the next level as an Army commit.
Junior Preston Hatter Preston Hatter 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB Westfield | 2023 State TX (6’2 185lbs) out of Klein Oak was another QB who was able to join the 1,000-yard passing and rushing club. His 1,491 yards and 18 touchdowns through the air came in fashion. When throwing the ball he is smart and puts the ball on his receivers without them having to break stride. The lefty has some insane film breaking free from pressure. He’s strong and agile which makes him incredibly hard to bring down. Hatter has legit 4.5 speed and deploys in when he’s on the move. In this Panther offense, he does a lot not only passing but in the option game which allows the offense to be versatile and successful. His skill set allowed him to rush for 1,146 yards and 21 TDs through 12 games so far. Hatter has some D1 interest but no comments yet for the 2023 QB.
Tomball Memorial ran a two QB system in 2021. Left-handed junior Reed Odell (6’4 190lbs) would come out as the starter but would split drives throughout games with sophomore Lane Stockton (6’0 160lbs). Odell threw for 1513 yards, 19 TD, 6 INT, 57% completion, and a 118.9 QB rating. Stockton put up similar numbers with 1061 yards, 10TD, 2INT, 62% completion, and a 128.9 QB rating. Both QBs were very efficient, kept the ball out of harm’s way, and posed as threats in the run game. Their season only produced a 2-8 record, but the future is bright under center for the Wildcats.
