Continue ReadingHouston high school football is a halfway through the season. Week six had a great game of the week Friday night probably the best game in the whole season. Both teams went into this game undefeated and have a huge rivalry. The Spring Lions(4-1) faced off against The Westfield Mustangs(5-0). Both teams are highly ranked in Houston and highly ranked in the whole state of Texas. The game started out with Westfield dominating Spring before the 2nd half. However, Spring kicked it up a notch in the 2nd half and almost caught up with Westfield. The final score was 31-21 with The Westfield Mustangs being victorious. The Westfield Mustangs had a defensive powerhouse a lot of playmakers and standouts players that I’ll be discussing.
#10 Anthony Holmes Anthony Holmes 6'2" | 240 lbs | DL Westfield | 2022 State TX Jr DT, DE Sr 6’2 285 lbs
Anthony Holmes Anthony Holmes 6'2" | 240 lbs | DL Westfield | 2022 State TX had himself an outstanding game. Holmes is a large body and not only is that, but he’s quick and fast off the ball as well. Holmes had excellent footwork and finesse with his swim move. Holmes was able to get passed his blockers to get into the backfield to stop a lot of run plays and even got a sack. Holmes is a college prospect having numerous colleges and universities offers from University of Houston, Colorado, UTSA, University of Indiana, Duke University, University of Colorado, University of Eastern Kentucky and etc. However, Holmes decided to commit to the University of Virginia for football this fall. Holmes ended the night with eight overall tackles and two sacks.
#4 Sy Johnson FS, SS, CB Sr
Sy Johnson is a playmaker best way I can describe him. Johnson was flying all over the field especially in his positions. Johnson was able to play free and strong safety and cornerback. Any position Johnson played he was able to perform his job and assignments properly. Johnson was quick, fast and knew how to read Spring’s offense. Johnson being so versatile is what stood out to me. Johnson ended the night with ten overall tackles.
#25 Deqarius “Shug” Calhoun CB, FS Sr 5’10 175 lbs
An aggressive and hard hitting cornerback is Deqarius “Shug” Calhoun. Calhoun knew how to make a hit and make it count. Calhoun was able to properly cover his receiver and rarely let any passes come through. However, if they did Calhoun made the receiver regret catching it. All of Calhoun’s hits and tackles made an impact that stood out to me. I’m expecting a lot from Calhoun for the rest of his senior year.
#42 Demarion Stamps OLB Jr
Early on in the game outside linebacker Demarion Stamps set the tempo. Stamps made his presence known by caught an interception in the first couple minutes in the game. Stamps caught the interception then went on to score making it a pick six. Stamps was able to read The Spring Lions’ quarterback pass to determine where it was going. Stamps kept on making great plays after this being a massive threat to The Spring Lions. Stamps was able to finish the night with eight overall tackles.
