A few teams hit snags that bumped them down the line, while others picked up all-important victories that pushed them toward likely home playoff openers. We handed out Game Balls to players who did the latter.
Beaufort, Myrtle Beach and Carolina Forest got huge showings – including maybe the easiest Game Ball decision ever.
Zyrin Odom, Beaufort
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound receiver was shut down in Week 8 by a May River squad that decided he was a focal point. But Odom bounced back to make sure the Eagles would still be at home to open the playoffs. In the victory over Bluffton, Odom caught four passes for 114 yards and three scores. It boosted his season totals to 625 yards and seven touchdowns, both of which lead the Eagles.
Tre Phillips Tre Phillips 6'4" | 220 lbs | DL Myrtle Beach | 2022 State SC , Myrtle Beach
The Seahawks’ defensive end got a big-guy touchdown when he hauled in a 15-yard pop pass from teammate Adam Randall Adam Randall 6'3" | 200 lbs | WR Myrtle Beach | 2022 State SC in the second quarter of the region win at South Florence. But Phillips’ contribution from his regular spot was bigger. Against the normally high-scoring Bruins’ offense, the senior had 10 total stops (seven assisted, three solo) and two tackles for loss. As a result, South scored 30 points below its season average and Myrtle Beach clinched the Region VI-4A championship.
Luke Janack Luke Janack 6'1" | 210 lbs | LB Carolina Forest | 2022 State SC , Carolina Forest (pictured)
As as astute follower on Twitter (@BoKnowsFootbal1) pointed out, Janack’s Friday performance would have been worth around 72 points with the ESPN Fantasy Football scoring system. If that doesn’t tell you how ridiculous the Panther senior’s night was, here are the specifics: 14 tackles from his spot at linebacker; from his running back position, 21 carries, 281 yards and five touchdowns, including the game winner against Socastee with no time on the clock.
