Week 7 featured some Top 10 showdowns that lived up to the billing and hype. There were plenty of shootouts and eye-popping numbers put up by skill players at all positions.
Here’s a look at some of the ones that stood out:
QB [player_tooltip player_id="203571" first="Luke" last="Othic"], 5-10, 170, Warrensburg, 2022
His Warrensburg squad lost a shootout, 49-43, to Pleasant Hill but Othic did all he could. He ran 27 times for 256 yards and four touchdowns, while completing 13 of 21 passes for 141 yards and two more scores. He is averaging 134.5 yards per game on the ground, one of two ball carriers on the Tigers with such distinction. RB Bryce Schoonover is averaging 113 yards per game. The other standout in this game was Pleasant Hill’s [player_tooltip player_id="217654" first="Dylan" last="Kauffman"], the Roosters’ feature back. The team ran the ball 65 times for 359 yards as a team and Kauffman had 49 carries for 304 yards. The junior scored five touchdowns on the ground and had one catch for 67 yards.
RB [player_tooltip player_id="96261" first="KJ" last="Smith"], 5-9, 180, Kearney, 2022
If his name sounds familiar, it is because he is seemingly on here every game. The Bulldogs rely heavily on him and he usually delievers. In a win against Raytown South last week, he had five touchdowns (3, 3, 6, 36 and 51 yards) and finished with 225 yards on only 12 carries. For the season he is just shy of a 1,000 yards and that includes Week 1 when the team was idle due to COVID-19 issues. The Bulldogs are racking up 236.8 yards per game running the ball and Smith accounts for 161 of that, while scoring 14 of the team’s 15 touchdowns on the ground.
DL [player_tooltip player_id="198125" first="James" last="Williams"], 6-6, 220, Park Hill South, 2022
In a 7-0 football game, there were obviously defensive standouts on both sides, but Williams really stood out as the Panthers won and improved to 7-0 on the year by beating North Kansas City. He shared the team high in tackles with 12, with two sacks and five tackles for loss. Torrin Ziegler and Roger Guillory also had 12 tackles, while Ziegler had a team-high six tackles for loss.
