Both teams went into this game undefeated. The Spring Lions(4-1) faced off against The Westfield Mustangs(5-0). Both teams are highly ranked in Houston and highly ranked in the whole state of Texas. The game started out with Westfield dominating Spring before the 2nd half. However, Spring kicked it up a notch in the 2nd half and almost caught up with Westfield. The final score was 31-21 with The Westfield Mustangs being victorious. Even though, The Spring Lions lost the game they still had a lot of defensive standouts.
#99 Gerrod Henderson DE Sr 6’3 260 lbs
The most crucial part on defense starts up front at the defensive line. #99 Gerrod Henderson is a great and aggressive defensive end. Henderson was quick off the ball, got passed Westfield’s offensive line and I usually saw him in the backfield. Henderson was always directly or indirectly involved with every stop The Lions made. Henderson was big, fast and strong an ideal defensive end. Henderson is a college prospect having numerous offers from colleges and universities. He has offers from UTSA, University of Houston, University of Louisiana, Tulane University, Sam Houston State University, and University of Incarnate Word. Henderson ended the night with 11 overall tackles and one sack.
#23 Bryce Morton MLB Jr 6’0 210 lbs
Bryce Morton stood out to me as a middle linebacker. Bryce never let a moment or opportunity slip by him. Bryce was good at blitzing and assisted in stopping run plays. Bryce found himself in the backfield a good amount of times and even swatted a pass that led to an interception.
#22 Darryl Doherty OLB, MLB Sr 5’10 195 lbs
A very aggressive and strong linebacker is #22 Darryl Doherty. Doherty was all over the field blitzing, covering and tackling all night. The Westfield Mustangs could barely get around Doherty especially on run plays. Doherty was very aware and was great at pursuing the ball. Doherty has a college offer to Louisiana College. Doherty had a great night ending it with 13 overall tackles.
#10 Ivan Autenreith DE Sr 6’4 240 lbs
Another standout defensive end was #10 Ivan Autenreith. Autenreith was quick and explosive off the ball. Westfield’s offensive line couldn’t keep Autenreith under control. Autenreith on one side and Henderson on the other side was an unstoppable force on the defensive line. Autenreith has a college offer to Louisiana College. Autenreith finished the night with six overall tackles.
#6 Bruce Davis FS, SS Sr 5’10 185 lbs
#6 Bruce Davis is free safety and strong safety. Davis was a safety that liked to get close to the action. Davis blitzed a few plays, but he was great during pass plays. If a receiver caught a pass in Davis’ area or zone they weren’t getting far. One thing I was really impressed by from Davis was that he never missed an open field tackle. Being able to make good open field tackles showcases that Davis has great form and awareness. Davis finished the night with 10 overall tackles.
