On Saturday October 2nd, 2022 two powerhouse high schools played against each other The Fort Bend Hightower Hurricanes(4-1) vs The Angleton Wildcats(5-1). Both teams are having a great seasons currently, dominating nearly every team they come across especially Angleton being undefeated. However, Angleton suffered their 1st lost from The Hightower Hurricanes with a score of 18-16. It was a really close game either team having the chance to win until the very last second. The Hightower Hurricanes defense was the main reason they won this game. The Hightower Hurricanes have a lot of defensive standouts that I’ll be discussing.
#6 Julian Payne S, OLB Sr 6’2 and #33 Jeremy Strawder RB, FS, SS Sr 5’9
Two defensive standouts are Julian Payne and Jeremy Strawder they’re both safeties. Julian can also play outside linebacker which was his better position overall. Julian and Jeremy both had great awareness reading Angleton’s to tell where the ball was going. Both Julian and Jeremy were able to catch an interception which helped Hightower overall win the game. Julian ended the night with six overall tackles and Julian ended with five overall tackles.
#91 Treylon Beloney DE Jr 6’2 225 lbs and #42 Robert Staten TE, DE, WR So
Two defensive ends that stood out to me are #91 Treylon Beloney and #42 Robert Staten. Angleton’s offensive line had trouble blocking these two defensive threats. Treylon and Robert were both quick and fast off the ball. I would say Robert is defensive end with more finesse, but Treylon is definitely bigger and stronger. Those two being on opposite ends of each other causes a lot of problems for Angleton in the backfield. Treylon and Robert are integral to Hightower’s defensive line they both ended the night with two overall tackles each. Although, those numbers don’t measure their true skills and they both managed to get a sack. I’m expecting more progress from the both of them in years to come.
#24 Ephraim Dotson CB So 5’10 160 lbs
I was really impressed by the cornerback Ephraim Dotson performance. Ephraim is very fast not giving the wide receiver he was covering many options. No one could get pass Ephraim rarely letting any passes come through. I was shocked to find out that Ephraim is only a sophomore. Ephraim seems way too experienced and good to be just in his sophomore year. In his next three years of football I’m positive Ephraim will become a top college prospect. Ephraim ended the night with eight overall tackles.
#8 D’ Cambren Verrett FS, SS Sr 6’2 180 lbs
D’ Cambren Verrett was definitely the core to Hightower’s defense. Verrett is a strong and fast safety, but he was certainly involved in the action. Verrett didn’t wait for the ball to come to him he made sure to go after it or whomever had the ball. I love watching an aggressive player especially a safety like Verrett that isn’t afraid to get physical. Verrett was able to block a pass that would of resulted in a touchdown and ended the night with eight overall tackles.
