Continue ReadingThe battle between No. 1 Roosevelt and No. 2 Mead was close for the first half. In the second half, the doors were blown off by Roosevelt, and the dominant second half led to a 37-7 win to send a statement about their chances of getting back to the state championship game this fall.
There were plenty of standout performances, and we have four game balls to hand out to players who stood out in the win. Here’s a look at the players who shined.
Tucker Peterson Tucker Peterson 6'2" | 175 lbs | WR Roosevelt | 2023 State CO , 2023, 6’2, 185, WR/LB
We’ve been high on Peterson ever since he hit the high school scene for Roosevelt, and his performance Friday night reminded you why. He has good speed and flies all over the field. With his size as well, he is a threat in the passing game, and it showed when he jumped higher than a defensive back and high-pointed a catch for a touchdown. He did an excellent job in pursuit from his linebacker spot and got to the edge to stop some of the outside runs Mead tried to hit, and he can also be a solid returner in special teams. Peterson is a player who has continued to see his stock rise and will be a prospect to watch for his class.
Anthony Munoz Anthony Munoz 5'9" | 200 lbs | DL Roosevelt | 2023 State CO , 2023, 5’9, 200, OL/DL
Roosevelt relied on its right side of the offensive line, whether they ran to the left or the right. Munoz was the right guard and showed great athleticism at the position. He would pull to the left as a lead blocker and did a good job getting downfield for some blocks. He would even line up in the backfield as a fullback in the team’s heavy package and play as the lead blocker. There was also some good physicality on his blocks and he would get a push when engaged. His versatility to go downfield and pull makes him a key blocker up front for the team.
Matthew Roles, 2022, 5’10, 220, OL/DL
The other offensive lineman on the right side of the line that led the way up front, Roles plays with a mean streak. He too did a good job pulling to the left side and delivering a block that freed up his backs to go downfield. At his size, he also shows the tools to drive an opponent when engaged, and he plays with a high motor doing it as well. Roles looks to be a big presence, and him and Munoz formed a solid duo to run behind all night long, especially in the second half.
Bronco Hartson, 2024, 6’0, 180, DE/OLB
There were many defensive stars in the game for Roosevelt, but one under-the-radar player that stood out was Hartson. Despite a smaller frame for a defensive lineman, he used his speed and quickness to get in the backfield and create some havoc. He played disciplined on his reads in the option game and came up with some stops there, but he also showed the downhill ability to get pressure and record a sack. With Mead’s counters and outside runs, Hartson had to also try and set an edge to the outside to try and force some runs inside. The speed and quickness is there for him to be a disrupter, and as he continues to build into his frame, he can be a nice player on the defensive edge for a good Roosevelt team.
