Hartsville’s Da’Marion Coe (pictured) wasn’t the reason the Red Foxes won their Region VI-4A opener at North Myrtle Beach. There were bigger impact plays and players in this one.
Just the same, Coe offered a possible glimpse of the Red Fox future and maybe a little bit of the present on Friday night during the 45-20 win. He took the first Hartsville touch of the game back for an 89-yard kickoff return score. He showed great vision, an ability to break tackles and then some highlight-inducing speed.
The 5-foot-9, 160-pound freshman added another 25 yards on a pair of end arounds later on, but that initial return early in the game was clearly what ignited the Red Foxes in this one. Hartsville came into the game 0-3, but it is quickly getting used to Big-Play Coe.
Consider his stat lines from his first three games: One carry for 79 yards and a touchdown and five kickoff returns for 152 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, he’s already added 15.5 tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Hartsville coach Jeff Calabrese said during pregame that Coe was a player to watch later in his career. We know he’s got one now.
OTHER STANDOUTS
Much like North Myrtle Beach’s first two games of the season, the best player on the field for the Chiefs was again Elijah Vereen Elijah Vereen 5'9" | 170 lbs | DB North Myrtle Beach | 2022 State SC . Playing a bit more defense than he did in the previous two contests, the 5-foot-8, 170-pound Vereen didn’t get the type of carries at running back he has in other games.
However, he still reached the end zone two more times, giving him 10 rushing scores through three games. He also recorded 3.5 tackles and an interception in the third quarter and he should have had another in earlier in the period. He ripped a ball away a Hartsville receiver on a play that clearly tilted Vereen’s way on the TV replay.
On the Hartsville side, tailbacks J’Shawn Anderson J’Shawn Anderson 6'0" | 185 lbs | RB Hartsville | 2023 State SC (18 carries, 143 yards, two touchdowns) and Carmello McDaniel (10/123/2) were dynamic again.
Running out of the Red Foxes’ Wing-T variation and behind huge offensive linemen Slayton Stokes and Reggie Cabbagestalk Reggie Cabbagestalk 6'4" | 300 lbs | OL Hartsville | 2022 State SC , the process was too much for the Chiefs to overcome.
The two players have now rushed for a combined 879 yards and 14 touchdowns through four games.
THIS AND THAT
Hartsville doesn’t throw it much (for good reason). But Jonathan Flemister caught three of the four completions for Hartsville quarterback McKendrie Douglas. Flemister, an elusive 5-foot-7, 145-pound senior, finished the night with 119 yards and a touchdowns receiving as well as a couple carries around the edge.
North Myrtle Beach senior linebacker TJ Cox TJ Cox 5'11" | 185 lbs | LB North Myrtle Beach | 2022 State SC finished the night with 11 total tackles (seven solo, eight assists). All those carries from the Hartsville running backs certainly kept him busy.
