In fairness, though, Ramirez’ usual has been pretty unreal.
The senior signal-caller has been putting up video game-type numbers for Broome, setting a school record for passing yards in a game with 500 two weeks ago, and is already the Centurions’ career passing yards leader.
Friday night, he didn’t do that. But he did plenty.
Ramirez started the game 9-for-15 despite several drops and one incompletion he had to fire into the ground to avoid a loss. He threw for 121 yards and a touchdown in the first half as Broome built a 21-7 lead.
He did a lot more, too. He kept plays alive with his legs. He shook off those drops, continuing to trust receivers to make plays. He checked into run plays to exploit mismatches that allowed RB Jamir Dewberry to run wild. And, he led the Centurions to their second win of the season.
“It’s nice when I can handle the whole offense, when I can check to certain plays,” Ramirez said. “I trust Jamir, and I trust my receivers, and we have an awesome line. It’s good to be able to put us in the best situation.”
The best situation, for the Centurions, usually includes Ramirez on the field. He played some emergency safety two weeks ago.
“I want to win,” he said. “Whatever it takes for us to win is what I want to do.”
• Dewberry, meanwhile, had his second 200-yard night of the year with a massive rushing performance. He had a solid night just in the first half, as he tallied 95 yards on just seven carries, with touchdowns of 37 and 1 yards.
It was the Centurions’ first drive of the second half, though, that showed Dewberry’s game-breaking ability. Leading just 21-7, Broome’s defense got a crucial fourth-down stop after allowing Landrum to drive to the 33-yard line to open the half. Broome responded on the ground. Dewberry for 17. Dewberry for 12. Dewberry for 38, touchdown. Three plays, three carries, and game-changing 28-7 lead. He’d add a 28-yard score later in the quarter, and finish with 205 rushing yards.
“The O-line did a great job,” Dewberry said. “They were opening up holes for me all over the place, and it was easy to run tonight.”
• Broome also got some key offensive output from different sources, a good sign for the Centurions going forward. With Braxtin Turner and Zyon Wilkins limited by Landrum’s defense, Carlos Cohen and Cam Scruggs stepped into the gap. Cohen had a huge 31-yard pickup on a reception to go with 40 yards on the ground, while Scruggs caught Ramirez’ touchdown pass to open the scoring.
• Landrum was limited by Broome’s bend-but-don’t-break defense, but the Cardinals’ double-wing attack did have some success, particularly with Colton Link. The sophomore was Landrum’s most effective rusher by far, with tough yards in the middle and a 32-yard scamper in the first half for the Cardinals’ only score of the night.
