Today’s article looks toward the defensive side of the football, in particular, defensive backs in the 2024 class. We looked at a slew of highlight tapes and found some serious hidden talent that excelled in last Friday’s opener. Here’s who to watch as we enter week two.
Cyrus Reyes, 6’1″ 185, Taylor
A steady tackler in space who can quickly close ground once he reads run. Reyes is a smooth operator out of a backpedal that is equipped with quality ball skills. Cyrus takes great angles to the football and will utilize the gator tackle when out leveraged. He has an outstanding mixture of tackling ability and coverage skills that should make him a force this season & beyond.
Keshawn Lamont, 5’10”, 150, Cypress Creek
A burner who never gives up on a play and can make touchdown-saving tackles. Keshawn is strong in run-support and not afraid to pop opposing ball carriers when the opportunity presents itself. Lamont always seems to be around the football, looking for any type of work. I’m very interested to see him in coverage as the season goes on.
Kayden Cooper, 6’1″, 180, New Caney
Just a sophomore, but Cooper has already displayed impressive ball skills with a two-interception performance last Friday. His ability to read routes and track the football while it’s in the air is uncanny. Copper can flat-out run, too, even beating opposing wideouts to the ball. I think his length for a corner and god-given athleticism will make him a hot commodity in the recruiting scene.
Taytum Johnson, 5’8″, 150, Cinco Ranch
An intelligent, playmaking zone corner with great route recognition. Johnson is comfortable playing out of both a back-pedal and shuffle, featuring tight breaks that never reach outside the framework of his body. Taytum plays fundamentally sound football and will even come up to make tackles in run support.
Peanut Brazzle, 5’10”, 160, Lake Belton
I love this young man’s nickname and style of play. Peanut is a physical safety prospect that can play in-between the tackles. He triggers once the ball is thrown and will shimmy in space to avoid missed tackles. Brazzle breaks on routes well and can simply take the ball away in 50/50 situations.
Johnquarius Ervin, 5’10”, 170, Amarillo
A firm open-field tackler and core special teamer. Irvin does a fantastic job of keeping outside leverage and forcing everything inside. Johnquarius plays a downhill brand of football, looking to set the tone once he comes up to deliver a hit. He most certainly has his best football ahead of him.

Damani Maxson, 6’1″, 180, Clear Lake
Trace Meadows, 6’1″, 175, A&M Consolidated
