We had a phenomenal WPIAL rivalry battle between Belle Vernon and Thomas Jefferson. This game came down to the wire. Here are my standouts.
Belle Vernon – <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27627" first="Devin" last="Whitlock"] </strong>(SR) Athlete 5’8 175: Whitlock was mostly kept in check all game until it mattered most. He had a 42-yard TD run late in the 4th to tie the game at 21. Then he had the go ahead 40-yard score, leaving 4 seconds left in the game, winning 28-21. Whitlock had 20 carries for 164 yards including those 2 touchdowns.

Belle Vernon – <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="64565" first="Quinton" last="Martin"]</strong> (SOPH) Athlete 6’3 180: Martin was a big factor in the first half, scoring the first 2 touchdowns on a 50-yard run and an 88-yard kickoff return. Martin was all over the field on defense as well. He made some tackles in the secondary that could have been touchdowns. Unfortunately, Martin got injured early 3rd quarter and never returned.

Thomas Jefferson – <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="64014" first="Jordan" last="Mayer"] </strong>(JR) Defensive End 6’5 230: Mayer showed to improve from last season. He was all over the football making tackles. He quickly disengaged blocks and ran to the other side of field to make the play. He had a few hard hits as well.
Belle Vernon – <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="27628" first="Cole" last="Weightman"]</strong> (SR) Defensive End 6’3 210: Weightman moved to D-end this season after playing linebacker. He looks more natural at defensive end. Good get off with bend and speed. He showed to quickly shed blocks as well. He was disruptive in the backfield tackling guys at or behind the line of scrimmage.
Thomas Jefferson – <strong>Joe Lekse</strong> (SR) Quarterback: Lekse did not pass the ball a lot, but he scored all 3 touchdowns for the Jaguars. He got some quickness with good speed. It was hard to take him down at times as he kept his feet moving on contact. He carried the ball 21 times for 116 yards including those three touchdowns. His last TD came early in 4th to take the lead.
