Since our last article discussing such things, there has been a ton of change up within the state’s rankings. In fact, only one player who was on our list last time has managed to return. This player happens to be Johne’ss Davis, who we think could eventually be the state’s leading rusher. For now, the state’s leader in rushing is Dax Reese, who, as you can see below, has managed to dominate his competition in each of his games the past 4 weeks. In addition to Dax, our list of rushing leaders to this point is very impressive, and we suggest checking their film out if you have the chance.
Dax Reese- Briarwood (890 yards)
So far, Reese and the Briarwood Bucs have managed to achieve a 3-1 record. A large part of this success is due to Reese’s 890 total rushing yards. After 4 weeks, he not only leads the state, but he does so with over a 130 yard lead. This is largely due to the fact that in both week 1, and week 4 of the season, Reese ran for over 300 yards. In week 1, he ran for 335 yards, and during week 4, he rushed for 372 yards. In between then, Reese rushed for 111 yards during week 2, and 72 yards in week 3. As one can see, the gap between his yardage, and the second place leader in the state is quite huge. When the season progresses, we fully expect Reese to continue to add on to these numbers and widen the gap even more.
Simeon Askew- Houston County (752 yards)
Askew, who plays for Jake Fromm’s alma mater, has totaled 752 yards after 4 games. Unfortunately, this hasn’t translated to a winning record, as his team currently sits at 2-2 entering into week 5. These 2 losses have come to Coffee High School, as well as Perry High School. In each of these games though, Askew managed to contribute a good bit, as he toted the rock about 21-30 times a game. During the loss to Perry, he rushed for over 120 yards, while also rushing for 150 yards against coffee. Needless to say, Askew has accumulated these yards while also pitching forth his best effort for his team. This effort has helped him to average 188 yards a game. Going deeper into the season, we can only hope to see him start to catch up to Reese’s rushing total.
Johne’ss Davis- Athens Christian Academy (705 yards)
After 2 weeks of the season, Davis led the entire state of GA in rushing yards, totaling 450 yards after only 2 weeks. This came after 251 rushing yards in the first week of the season, and 199 yards in the second week. While he has continued to add to this total of yards, Davis can be seen to have been one of the more consistent players in the state. After one more game since our last installment, Davis has added 255 yards to his total, along with 6 TD’s. These recent numbers have helped Davis to average around 235 yards a game, while also totaling 12 TD’s on the year so far. If this is what 3 weeks into the regular season looks like for him, we look forward to seeing what his team’s 4th game will do for his rushing total.
Akhori Jones- Mount de Sales Academy (642 yards)
After only 3 regular season games, Jones has totaled 642 yards and 6 TD’s, putting him within the top 5 slots in the state when it comes to total rushing yards. This is largely due to the fact that he has already rushed for over 200 yards two different times this season. This has come over the past two weeks, as Jones ran for 201 yards against Southwest, as well as 272 yards against Brookstone. Even before these two games, Jones showed out in the running game, rushing for 169 yards and 1 TD against Jasper High. If Jones can continue to run the ball at this rate, he will start to see himself on this list more often as the season continues.
