Week 3 is in the books, and fast approaching is week 4 that features tons of great league matchups. No more non-league cross-state matchups for now, as good as some of those were. Let’s check out 4 great Grand Rapids area matchups.
Games to watch
Zeeland West (1-1) @ Mona shores (2-1) - In a huge OK-Green matchup, Zeeland West heads to Mona Shores for a battle of two heavyweights. Parker Holman is going to carry a huge load going against an always great Shores defense. It’s going to be difficult for the Dux to score, but after Muskegon last week, and being able to use what worked for Union, I expect the Dux to head in with a solid game plan. As for Mona Shores, they just need to play their style of football. RB Dahmir Farnum is going to have a heavy load per usual, and I’m interested to see what G Brayden Flanders can do after a great performance last week.
Forest Hills Northern (1-2) @ Northview (2-1) - A great OK-White matchup goes to Northview this week. FH Northern has losses against Lowell, which was lost by 1 point, and a blowout to Jenison. Northview on the other hand has a loss against a great FH Central team. This is a winnable game for both teams. For FH Northern, Jake Peterson and the huskies defense need to find a way to contain RB [player_tooltip player_id="30303" first="Da’Torian" last="Roberts"] for Northview. On the opposite end, Northview MLB Calvin Cuba needs to have a sound game against the good FH Northern O-line and RB Christian Arrington.
Coopersville (3-0) @ Holland Christian (1-2) - Coopersville is coming off a few lackluster seasons, but they’ve started red hot coming out the gates in 2021. Last week, Coopersville won a tight game against Fruitport and is now 1-0 in league play. RB/MLB Dylan Merlo had an all-time performance last week, let’s see if he can replicate that. As for Holland Christian, they run the risk of starting out 1-3 still with their hardest games to come. They look improved over last year’s winless campaign, though this is going to be a great indicator as for how much they’ve improved. RB Will Alderink needs to have a good showing, as Holland Christian can’t afford to repeat the 65 yards of total offense from last week. This will surely have big implications for the final OK-Blue Standings.
Rockford (3-0) @ Grandville (1-2) - The last time these two teams met, it was in an electric 3rd-round playoff matchup that saw Rockford come away with the win 34-28 in triple overtime. This time, the stakes are still very high as Rockford can widen an early lead in the OK-Red, while Grandville needs this one to get to .500 leading into the middle of the season. Rockford QB [player_tooltip player_id="54861" first="Zak" last="Ahern"] looks to lead the charge on offense while S Samuel Watts is tasked with a big job on defense. On Grandville’s end, they need to find a way to involve TE Brayden Gable in the game as much as possible if they wish to come away with the upset. The final standings of the OK-Red will undoubtedly be influenced by how this game turns out.
COVID-19 cancelations are still a possibility. Every week there will be a chance that games are postponed for this reason. Make sure to check local news outlets, Prep Redzone Twitter, and other sources to make sure any game you’re looking to see is still on.
