Week four of the high school football will feature some Top-10 matchups against, but some of the more intriguing ones come at the lower classes.
Friday
Harrisonville at Warrensburg
This Missouri River Valley Conference game pits Class 4 No. 9-ranked Harrisonville at Class 4 No. 6-ranked Warrensburg. Harrisonville lost in a shootout last week but RB [player_tooltip player_id="96149" first="Jace" last="Reynolds"] put up a solid line of 28 carries for 350 yards and four touchdowns. Warrensburg moved up in the poll and will be led by quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="203571" first="Luke" last="Othic"], who is as dangerous as a run-pass option. He ran for 151 yards and passed for 114 with a combined three TDs vs. Excelsior Springs.
Liberty at Lee’s Summit West
Liberty has lost two straight and the offense has been held to only one touchdown the past two games. The key for the Blue Jays is to get RB [player_tooltip player_id="37448" first="Wentric" last="Williams III"] going. He was just shy of 300 yards in Week 1 but held to 45 yards combined the past two games. Lee’s Summit West is undefeated and one of the early surprises in the area. Running back [player_tooltip player_id="103108" first="Jackson" last="Surratt"] ran for 101 yards and two scores last week for the Titans, but sophomore Jaden Hines came in and got 60 yards on 7 carries to lead the team in yards gained per carry.
Odessa at Oak Grove
The No. 2-ranked team in Class 3, Odessa is still riding an undefeated streak that dates back to 2019. Fullback [player_tooltip player_id="96151" first="Blake" last="Heitman"] had three scores and 153 yards in the latest win for the Bulldogs. Fellow running back Shon Badder picked up 123 yards on only four carries and scored twice against Marshall. Not to mention the defense has pitched back-to-back shutouts. Oak Grove is 1-2 but put up 618 yards of offense in a loss against Kansas City Center. The rushing game accounted for 611 of those yards as the run-heavy offense had four different runners with more than 100 yards, led by [player_tooltip player_id="199039" first="Carson" last="Smith"]’s 24 carries for 202 and two TDs.
Platte County at North Kansas City
A showdown of two 2-1 teams, the Pirates have won two straight since a Week 1 loss to Class 6 Park Hill South. First-year starting QB Jared Parsons passed for two touchdowns last week as Platte County upset state-ranked Grandview — which matched his season total after two games. North Kansas City’s defense will be tested by the Pirates’ spread offense. However, the Hornets have standouts on the line in [player_tooltip player_id="188585" first="Adepoju" last="Adebawore"], [player_tooltip player_id="37534" first="Domonique" last="Orange"] and [player_tooltip player_id="99473" first="Edric" last="Hill"]. That group held Fort Osage to 29 yards on 39 carries.
Ray-Pec at Lee’s Summit North
Another Top-10 showdown and the only one in Kansas City this week with the No. 4 Panthers going to the No. 8 Broncos. Ray-Pec lost for the first time last week. Ray-Pec is sticking with [player_tooltip player_id="99468" first="Jaidyn" last="Doss"] at running back for the most part but 6-foot-5, 205-pound sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="178435" first="Jaden" last="Reddell"] is filling in nicely. He had four catches for 91 yards and a touchdown last week. CB [player_tooltip player_id="103073" first="Dewuan" last="Mack"] was a ballhawk last week for the Broncos with two picks, but a penalty on roughing the passer negated one of them.
St. Pius X at Maryville
Another small-school Top-10 game with Class 3 No. 5 Pius traveling north to Maryville to face the No. 10 team in Class 2. The winner of this will be in the driver’s seat for the Midland Empire Conference crown, though Lafayette is still in the mix. Pius has scored 42, 56 and 48 points in the first three games. Last week, QB [player_tooltip player_id="203579" first="Jack" last="Mosh"] threw for 224 yards and 3 TDs. [player_tooltip player_id="203580" first="Caden" last="Stoecklein"] will be a key play for Maryville, after racking up 150 yards of total offense — 76 yards on the ground with 1 score and 85 yards receiving with a TD — but also added a key interception on defense.
Saturday
Cardinal Ritter at Lincoln College Prep
The Class 3 No. 7-ranked Cardinal Ritter comes to Kansas City from St. Louis to play one of the best ’city’ schools in recent years. Lincoln College Prep had a game called off last week due to COVID-19 issues with the opponent but in an odd move, they put up 63 points in a win over Kansas City East on Tuesday. Now, they will play a state power in Cardinal Ritter on Saturday. A key player to watch for the Blue Tigers will be sophomore RB [player_tooltip player_id="203583" first="John" last="Price"], who coach William Lowe calls one of the best in the state. Cardinal Ritter WR [player_tooltip player_id="37669" first="Fredrick" last="Moore"] will be one to watch. He only has five catches this season for 173 yards, but has four TDs.
