This Friday’s contests include some players who have yet to get on the field against others who are already battle tested in 2021. There are future college signees next to a few who would like to get into that conversation.
And capping it all off is a battle in the trenches that will likely dictate the outcome.
MYRTLE BEACH AT OCEANSIDE COLLEGIATE
The early signs are that Myrtle Beach can finally get on the field after an open date to start the year and then a pair of quarantine weeks. That means Adam Randall Adam Randall 6'3" | 200 lbs | WR Myrtle Beach | 2022 State SC and Ryan Burger Ryan Burger 6'3" | 175 lbs | QB Myrtle Beach | 2022 State SC will be live for the first time since the CNB Kickoff Classic. The two future Division-I players will be chomping at the bit to get going. Meanwhile, Oceanside’s own pair of offensive weapons, quarterback Colby Shirey Colby Shirey 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Oceanside Collegiate | 2022 State SC and running back Vaughn Blue Vaughn Blue 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Oceanside Collegiate Academy | 2023 State SC , have three games under their belt already. Blue has rushed for 242 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Shirey has run for 132 and three and passed for another 330 yards and two scores.
CAROLINA FOREST AT SUMTER
The general consensus is that one of these teams will win Region VI-5A, and while this game is technically a non-region game (for now), it will no at the very least be a precursor to their region contest on October 15. This one will feel important on Friday night. And it means Carolina Forest’s trio of back field players in quarterback Scott Saylor and tailbacks Luke Janack Luke Janack 6'1" | 210 lbs | LB Carolina Forest | 2022 State SC and Khalil Johnson will have to produce – and protect the ball. The three have combined for 1,081 yards of offense through three games. Just as importantly, they have just one turnover between them.
WEST ASHLEY AT BEAUFORT
Beaufort is quickly establishing itself as having one of the best defensive lines in all of Class 4A. Led by tackle Eamon Smalls Eamon Smalls 6'3" | 300 lbs | DL Beaufort | 2023 TX and end Alvin Wilson, this is a unit that has allowed just 34 points through three games – all Eagles victories. The test this week, though, will be tougher. West Ashley, besides being a team from a bigger classification, also has some bodies up front who can pave the way for Jahleel Porter Jahleel Porter 5'11" | 185 lbs | RB West Ashley | 2022 State SC . The senior running back got into the end zone on the ground last week in a loss to Goose Creek. But he also showed some nifty work catching passes out of the backfield, one of which went for another score. Keeping the impressive Beaufort defensive line at bay on Friday may require more of that.
