Football is a game of two halves. Teams can have success in the first half, but the game is four quarters and it’s how you finish that gets the job done. West Mesquite came out blazing and had control of the first half. Keller Timber Creek, made the right adjustments at halftime and made a furious comeback in the second half which gave them their first win of the season. We will spotlight the players who were difference makers from each team.
Jacob Porter QB C/O 2022 Keller Timber Creek
If I had to pick an MVP of the game it would have been Porter. The senior quarterback is a gamer. Porter struggled the first half against a Wrangler defense that was bringing the blitz and causing havoc. Porter’s second half performance showed grit, that he is the leader of the Falcon offense and he displayed a will to win. Jacob stands about 6’2, has a long lean frame, strong arm, when he sets his feet and has a clean pocket he has a good fastball. What was most impressive, was his ability to run the read option and scramble to escape the pass rush. Porter is elusive, has very good speed, a long strider who pulled away from defenders late in the fourth quarter on a 69 yard nail in the coffin run to shut the door on West Mesquite. On the night Porter finished with 147 yards on the ground with one rushing TD, went 19 of 27 for 229 yards with four passing touchdowns. College coaches definitely should take a peek at Porter, his game has next level written all over it.
Lonnie Johnson WR C/O 2023 Keller Timber Creek
Johnson passes the eye test at first glance. His athletic frame at 6’4 caught my attention in warm ups. Johnson has long arms, a big catch radius, uses his body well against defensive backs, strong, soft hands, that engulf the football when he makes a grab. Johnson is a mismatch for most defensive backs at the high school level. He runs crisp routes, gets off the line easily, beat defenders several times on quick slant routes, in cuts and a post route that all lead to big plays for the Falcons. Lonnie seems to be at ease when its a 50/50 ball, as he caught a touchdown pass in the second half over a cornerback in man coverage. Johnson has what college offensive coordinators crave in today’s game of wide open offensive sets. As the season continues, look for Johnson to get plenty of recruiters headed to Timber Creek.
Maddox Allbritton WR C/O 2023 Keller Timber Creek
Allbritton is a matchup headache. He consistently got open all night and had me checking my roster to make sure I got my notes up to par on him!!!. Love his game, he is gritty, blocks well in the run game, has excellent hands, and makes the difficult catch look routine. If a defensive back doesn’t get hands on him off the line, he finds the weakness in the defense and exposes them. Maddox plays bigger than his 5’10 frame and has the speed to get deep. He had two touchdown receptions and even pulled up on an end around to toss a TD for an extra point, showing versatility. Allbritton had an impressive night against the Wranglers and as the season progresses colleges should definitely get eyes on him.
Trevion Mitchell Trevion Mitchell 6'5" | 275 lbs | DL West Mesquite | 2022 State TX OT C/O 2022 West Mesquite
Mitchell is a steady presence on the Wrangler offensive line. He sets the tone with his physical play, fires off the ball, gets to the second level well in the run game, which was on display during a first half TD run right off his block. Mitchell has that mean streak that coaches don’t have to encourage, once he gets an opponent in his grasp they usually aren’t a factor in the play. He has the footwork that next level linemen should have, moves lightly on his feet and has a quick kick step during pass protection. At 6’5 290lbs. Mitchell is beginning to gain ground on the recruiting front, recently picking up a Southeastern Oklahoma State offer.
Javion Jackson WR C/O 2023 West Mesquite
Jackson is a junior wideout who returns punts, kickoffs and is a dangerous weapon in the Wrangler arsenal. Javion is quick in and out of his breaks, has good hands, and once he breaks into the open field he has the next level speed to put up six points quickly. Jackson can go up and extend to grab the difficult throws, which expands his catch zone. Look for Jackson to put more defenses on notice that they need to have him on their scouting report each week. Colleges should be getting to know Jackson more as the season progresses.
