It’s an area that breeds toughness and physicality, and most years, it’s known for producing high-quality running backs. However, South Georgia has been producing some of the state’s best QBs, and this year we’ve seen some emerge and start to make a name for themselves.
Here are some “under the radar” quarterbacks to know in South Georgia for the 2021 season…
Thomas Castellanos Thomas Castellanos 5'11" | 190 lbs | QB Ware County | 2022 State GA – Ware County
He may not exactly fit the description as “under the radar” as he’s currently committed to play at D1 UCF, but make no mistake, Castellanos is still slept on by lots of major programs. Arguably the most dynamic dual-threat QB across the state, Castellanos picked up right where he left off last season and has led his Ware County teams to a strong 2-0 start to the season. He totaled 47 touchdowns last season and has proved by now that he’s more than an athlete at QB. He has a great arm and proved it once again this past weekend in a big 52-28 win over Eagles Landing Christian. Castellanos threw for 277 yards while rushing for another 119 yards and three touchdowns. Again, he may already be committed, but after his play last year and great start to this year, he should have more offers his way by now.
Down in Savannah is where you’ll find an emerging junior ready to make his mark in the state. The 6-foot-2 180-pounder started his season on a high note as he led New Hampstead to a 41-12 win over Windsor Forest. Seely threw for 306 years in the season opener and threw for 4 touchdowns as well. He pushed the ball down the field and only turned the ball over once, throwing one INT. He led the team effectively and showed poise and leadership while doing it. In week two, Seeley threw for only 201 yards, but he was efficient as he was 16/19 in the contest. He made the right decisions, showed impressive accuracy, and didn’t turn the ball over in a 50-6 win over Johnson. He added three more touchdown tosses, giving him 7 on the season. He’s already towards the top of the state passing leaders with 507 yards through the first two games. If there’s a South Georgia QB in Savannah to know about this season, Seeley might be the guy.
Ryker Tomberlin – Bacon County
Bacon County might be 0-2 to start the season, but it’s tough to overlook the play of Tomberlin to start the season. A junior this year, Tomberlin has no problem slinging the ball around and has a chance to improve game by game for the rest of the season. He wasn’t outstanding in the season opener, throwing for just 207 yards and two touchdowns, but he stepped up in week two with 286 yards and 4 touchdowns. He’ll need to improve his completion %, but it’s easy to see his live arm and the ability to push the ball down the field. It’s easy to overlook rural QBs, but Tomberlin could be a big name in the region more and more this fall as he continues to develop his arm and add more muscle. He’s absolutely a South Georgia QB to keep an eye on this fall.
