We know the state consistently produced high-caliber running backs, and there are new running backs to know who have had a great start so far to the 2021 season.
Here are a few under the radar running backs in Georgia who could see their stock take off over the next few weeks…
Micah Welch – Baldwin
An excellent runner at 5-foot-9 200-pounds, the Middle Georgia back from Milledgeville is coming off one of the best seasons for any freshman back in the state last year. He’s a tough, physical runner who knows how to break tackles, but has some shiftiness to him as well. He changes directions well for someone 200-pounds and knows how to run hard behind his pads. He might be young, but if you don’t wrap him up properly, Welch is going to make you pay. As a freshman last year, Welch rushed for 503 yards on 82 carries (6.1 ypc) and found the end-zone four times. He’s off to another big start this season as a sophomore and will help carry for the load for the Baldwin offense. He may not be the biggest guy, but there’s a chance he could be one of the top overall backs in Middle Georgia this year as a sophomore.
Donovan Johnson Donovan Johnson 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Holy Innocents | 2022 State GA – Calvary Day
We may have a young superstar on our hands in freshman back, Donovan Johnson Donovan Johnson 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Holy Innocents | 2022 State GA . A football and track standout in middle school, the Savannah native at Calvary Day is running through defenses left and right through his first few high school games. The big, bruising back stands at 6-foot-1 195-pounds and uses his size and power to his advantage. He’s as big as a senior and breaks tackles like one too. Johnson shows good strength, balance, vision, and again, the ability to break tackles. That’s what he does. He’s a big play waiting to happen and is tough to bring down by just one defender. Even as a freshman, Johnson has made a name for himself and could be one of the state’s best over the next few years. He has a very bright future and he’s already one of the best offensive players in the Savannah area.
Dominic Elder Jr – North Oconee
One of the top backs in the Athens area, Elder Jr. is a tough runner who loves to get north and south in a hurry. The 5-foot-8 190-pounder has been excellent so far this season, especially in the last two games. In a big win over Ola two weeks ago, Elder Jr. rushed for 187 yards and one touchdown. He showed good burst, speed, and power for someone his size. He runs with authority and can carry the load if the offense needs him two. In a close loss to Cambridge last week, the junior back continued to impress, rushing for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Look for schools to start paying attention to him over the next several months if he continues to run the way he has so far this season.
