Tobin Miller (2022) I 6’0″ I #10 I WR/SB
If you are reading this article after reading the Stand Outs on Katy, I managed to mention Miller in it. I talked about a defensive back that displayed good technique on a certain play. While complementing said DBs skills, I expressed a great route by Miller, check out the article if you have no read it! Miller ran some solid routes! I noticed he was there deep shot receiver. Any time a pass went down field Miller was the target. He had good speed. His presence opened up plays for open receivers. On a the passing touch down, Miller motioned from the running back position, into the slot, but faking like he was getting a bubble screen. That play put al the attention on him, while a screen pass was developing on the other side of the field, where Miller’s teammate only needed to make one guy miss to get into the end zone. On the stat sheet, Miller was recording having one catch for 24 yards, but he was targeted multiple times. With no faults of his own, he and his QB were not connecting on some plays. I also appreciate Miller’s willingness to block, and he was actually good at it! A solid player who made the plays that came his way.
Mabrey Mettauer Mabrey Mettauer 6'5" | 215 lbs | QB The Woodlands | 2024 State TX (2024) I 6’5″, 215 lbs I #11 I QB
If you would have told me Mettauer was only a sophomore, on most plays I’d say you were out of your mind. On other plays, I’d say it’s not hard to tell. This kid Has…An…Arm! Mettauer was smart with the football, not throwing any interceptions and not making any unnecessary decisions. In, a game where he needed to throw to stay in it and beat Katy, he completed 20/31 for 164 yards and a touchdown! For such a young player, well for any high school QB in general, his footwork and mechanics were pretty advanced…when throwing the football. In the pocket, alluding defends, it could be better. I believe he needs to feel the rush a little better as well. Mettauer read the field well and threw to the open receiver, and not just the primary receiver, there is a different people! Overall, I think very highly of Mettauer and he will continue to grow and be a house hold name, he already has the tools!
Ben Ferguson (2022) I 6’0″ I #6 I WR
Miller was the go to receiver for deep passes, Ferguson was the go to receiver for…..everything else! His routes were impressive and his hands were even better, making tough a couple tough catches. With the only touch down reception for the Woodlands, Ferguson was an integral part of the offense. I really like his physicality on the runs after the catch. He worked the short and intermediate routes really nicely. On his touch down catch, he was able to break a tackle from a defensive linemen in pursuit and scored! Ferguson finished the game with 70 yards on 6 catches and a touch down.
John Podowski (2022) I 6’4″ I #99 I DE
I know to some, it would be difficult to find a stand out player on a defense that allowed a 200 + yard rusher, but man can Podowski play! He used his length and hands really well. The only time he wasn’t causing havoc was when he was being double teamed! When going against a single offensive lineman, Podowski was a problem. He got up the field a number of plays and even managed to get the ball carried down behind the the line twice! I liked Podowski’s game and he was easily the most consistent defensive linemen on the Woodlands team.
Though it is tough to accept defeat, these four players balled out last Thursday night!
