Unfortunately, Klein could not overcome an early deficit and fell short 31-14 to Memorial in the end. Here are the players that stood out on both teams during the game!
KLEIN:
Quentin Curtis (2022) I 5’9″, 210 lbs. I #4 I RB
Curtis did not go down easily. I only mention a players weight when I want to emphasize his stature, and Curtis was a LOAD. He ran tough and looked for contact! He hit the holes well, always falling forward. I don’t remember a play where Curtis went backwards. I was impressed with his blocking skills as well, opening running lanes for his teammates and making some solid blocks on the kickoff return unit. On 15 carries, Curtis rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown.
Myles Arterberry Myles Arterberry 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Klein High | 2023 State TX (2023) I 5’10″ I #25 I RB
If Curtis is thunder, Arterberry is lighting! This kid is Q U I C K. If he has space it’s almost a guaranteed touchdown. Not only did he have speed, but he was also elusive as well! He made a couple defenders look silly. On one play, it looked like he was the only white jersey around. Arterberry jump cutted to his right, planted his foot and darted to his left, and ended that play with a first down! It was very impressive to behold. He lined up at slot receiver as well. You can tell the coaching staff wanted to get Arterberry the ball as much as possible, putting him in the back for punt and kick off return.
MEMORIAL:
Carson Zahn (2022) I 5’9″ I #16 I RB
Zahn had a knack for making finding the open hole before there even was one! His balance and speed were on display for sure. Going down by a solo tackler was not an option for Zahn. On his lone touchdown, Zahn hit the hole going off the left side, put one hard foot in the ground, and out ran the defense to for a 21 yard score! That one play alone perfectly capsulated Zahn’s running style. The senior finished the game with 108 yards on 21 carries.
Bruce Bauer (2022) I #30 I LB
Bauer was a sure tackler. Once I noticed him, he couldn’t stay out of my eyesight! EVERYWHERE the ball went, 30 was there, nd he arrived angry! A clear leader on defense, Bauer made all the calls. His pass coverage skills were impressive as well. One play in particular, I watched Klein’s slot receiver run a shallow drag route, and for a split second was open, until 30 came downhill to force an incompletion. The pass was not great, and honestly that was a good thing, because if the ball was thrown at the receiver’s chest, it would have been a big hit. and I can’t emphasise this enough folks, a big hit. Bauer had 7 total tackles on the night.
Grayson Linceccum (2023) I 6’4″ 223 lbs I #44 I LB
Remember when I said above that Bauer called the defensive plays? Well he had a running mate. Linceccum was ALL OVER THE PLACE. When he saw a running lane open up, he shot through the gap for a tackle for loss or a short gain. His pursuit to the football was impressive and I noticed he was pretty efficient when disengaging with offensive linemen. This team used Linceccum’s size well, calling blitzes for him a good amount of times. He got pressure consistently, and even got home on one. I thought he got the quarterback in the endzone for a safety, but the refs gave a generous spotting. Linceccum did not miss a tackle, earning 13 total and leading the team!
