The Clear Falls defense did not allow a touchdown after halftime, but there was not enough momentum to etch out a win. Here are the standouts of the Friday night game.
Keewan Grismore (2022) I 6’0″, 200 lbs I #11 I SS/OLB
I first noticed Grismore when he came down a MEAN hit on a Dickinson running back. Something told me to watch him after that, and I’m glad I did. I love his physicality, he did not miss a single tackle, finishing the game with 12 total on the night and 2 tackles for loss to add to that. He played safety throughout the game, but his style of play is much more suited for linebacker. He covered over the top nicely and he could move really well for a player his size. Make no mistake, his aggression did not mean the offense could trick him into over pursuing and pass the ball right over his head! Grismore is a smart player, aware of his surroundings, and will come downhill and tattoo any ball carrier!
Devin Jackson (2022) I #20 I DB
There was a short curl route caught in front of Jackson. He broke on the pass quickly, immediately wrapping up the ball carrier. “Why are you mentioning a simple tackle Tee?”….I’m glad you asked. On that play, Jackson lifting the receiver in the air, and body slammed him to the turf! Yes, he got flagged for unnecessary roughness, but 1. I felt like it was an unfair call 2. I summed up Jackson’s play. THIS KID IS PHYSICAL. Anybody carrying the ball for Dickinson did not want to be tackled by this guy. He has great size and length, and used it well to play the receiver and break up passes. Jackson made more tackles in the run game than a defensive coordinator would like (no fault of his own) but he was not afraid to mix it up, finishing the game with 6 tackles.
David Smith (2023) I 5’9″ I #6 I RB
Smith ran great balance, rarely going down from one defender. He had great vision and fought for every yard. Smith was quicker than fast, hitting the open hole and having some big gains, but would get caught from behind. If he scored on 2 huge runs in particular, the outcome of the game might have been different. Smith was patient, waiting on the hole to open up, and would accelerate through it very nicely. Smith often made the first defender miss. He has all the tools of a great back, vision, acceleration, elusiveness, and as soon as he gets faster in the open field, Smith will be dangerous. He ended an impressive night with 95 yards on 18 carries, averaging roughly 5 yards per attempt! Smith’s longest run went for 40 yards.
Payton Greer (2024) I #22 I RB/WR/SB
I thought it was odd there was a receiver with the number 22. Then I noticed 22 in the backfield. Then I noticed 22 in the wing set. Then I noticed 22 at fullback! Greer lined up in multiple positions, and played each position well. Only being a sophomore, Greer still has room to improve. His routes need to be sharper and the punch on the impact block needs to be more physical, but Clear Falls has a very solid backfield for this season and the next! Greer was an underrated player, but was still effective. As a runner, he ran hard, hitting the hole and lowering his head, earning 54 yards on 8 carries, with his longest being 18 yards. As a receiver, the potential is there. He only had one catch for 2 yards, but I watched him run a couple of routes once I figured out he was a swiss army knife. Greer needs to sell his routes better with head fakes, and on his breaks need to be quicker, but with time he can he very efficient. Greer’s game was raw, but he will get bigger, stronger and faster. I became a fan of Greer Friday night and I can’t wait to see how he progress throughout his high school career.
Clear Falls took the first lost of the season (now 4-1), but there was a lot to like about that team. They are looking to bounce back against Clear Brook this upcoming Friday (10/1). If these players can continue to produce, they have a good chance of making that happen!
